  1. Transubstantiation (short story)

primarysource date April 2012 notability date April 2012 Transubstantiation is a short story written by United States American speculative fiction author Stephen Woodworth . It was originally published on November 27, 2000 at Strange Horizons . Plot summary The story follows Marcus, a man plagued with Apocalyptic dreams about the extinction of the human race, as he stops in Los Angeles, California on a bizarre quest to donate as much of his own blood as possible to collection centers. Marcus, it appears, is immortal and currently about 2,000 years old, having been one of the Roman Senators of the Praetorium who sentenced Jesus Jesus the Nazarene to death. Marcus had been the man to place the Crown of Thorns crown of thorns on the defendant s head. When Marcus cut himself on the barbs, the Nazarene grabbed his hand, mixing their blood to heal the wound and cursing Marcus to eternal Earthly life. In the present day, then, Marcus s blood donation obsession is meant to create an immortal family he keeps a scrapbook of newspaper articles detailing apparently miraculous recoveries that seem to be connected to transfusions of his own blood into the injured. Notes Marcus mentions that his first wife was named Julia, possibly referring to Julia daughter of Drusus the Younger Julia Caesar . Marcus, then, might have been Gaius Rubellius Blandus at the time of his eponymous transformation. 1. Theoctistus of Naples

Theoctistus lang it Teoctisto was the Duke of Naples during a very confused period in her history. His reign began sometime around 818 and lasted until 821 . On the death of Anthimus of Naples Anthimus , a war of succession broke out in Naples on account of the number of pretenders to the ducal throne. Anthimus had not given his consent to the nobility to elect his successor and so Naples was left without a de jure duke on his death. The populace, seeing the uncertainty of the aristocracy, in a coup d tat , invaded the Praetorium with the support of the upper strata of the military hierarchy, and constrained their rulers to send a delegation to Sicily to solicit a new duke from the patrikios patrician there, who had authority over the Ducatus Neapolitanus . With the appointment of Theoctistus to the vacant post, Naples was once again brought under Byzantine Empire Byzantine influence. Theoctistus was a military man at heart and he opened up a period of wars for the duchy. Nevertheless, he was replaced by another duke from Sicily, Theodore II of Naples Theodore II , who arrived in Naples in 821. Sources Schipa, Michelangelo. Storia del Ducato Napolitano . Napoli, 1895. 1. Cohors amicorum

Cohors amicorum is a Latin term, literally meaning cohort of friends . The notion wiktionary cohort cohort is to be taken not in the strict, military sense primarily the constitutive unit of a Roman legion circa battalion , but indicated a fairly large number accordingly, friend is to be taken in a loose sense, rather as in amicus curiae , compare the Hellenistic Aulic title philos basilikos . Roman history Originally, since the Roman republic proper i.e. before the Principate , the cohors amicorum was synonymous with the cohors praetoria so called after the praetorium , the tent in the field or more permanent dwelling of a Roman commanding general, military headquarters but also site of his other actions, e.g. as a judge, possibly on an adjoining podium called tribunal the military including or annexing various logistic, domestic, financial and administrative staff company functioning as suite and bodyguard of a high Roman official, such as a Roman governor who brought a trusted staff of most kinds with him to his post , especially in command of one or more legions. In the Principate, high administrative offices tended to be separated from military command transferred to imperial legatus legate s , but the various not strictly military functions still had to be acquitted, so there was a mainly civilian company of clerks, advisors, retainers etcetera, still referred to be such terms as cohors amicorum , amici possibly specified by the pivotal personality, e.g. Amici principis around the Emperor . In fact, the administration was to be streamlined in a rather typical officium see that article with ever more detailed rules on competences, career etcetera. The company remained at least as a social notion, if now very informal, and seems to have existed with other persons of high rank, such as imperial princes. its members were termed cohortalis plural cohortales the diminutive cohortalinus became a generic term like apparitor for non cadre clerks in a high dignitary s o ...   more details

  1. Gabbatha

File Brooklyn Museum The Judgment on the Gabbatha Le jugement sur le Gabatha James Tissot.jpg thumb 300px The Judgment on the Gabbatha by James Tissot , c. 1890 Gabbatha Aramaic is the Aramaic name of a place in Jerusalem , that is also referred to by the Greek name of Lithostr tos Greek language Greek . It occurs only once in the Bible , in John 19 13. ref Historical Dictionary of Jesus by Daniel J. Harrington 2010 ISBN 0810876671 page 62 ref ref Jesus and archaeology edited by James H. Charlesworth 2006 ISBN 080284880X pages 34 and 573 ref The Gospel of John states that Pontius Pilate brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat, in the place that is called Lithostrotos, and in Hebrew Gabbatha. The name Gabbatha is certainly an Aramaic word, for by Hebrew St. John, like other New Testament writers, denotes the Aramaic language which was spoken commonly at the time in Judea . It is not a mere translation of Lithostrotos , which properly means the tessellated or mosaic pavement where the judgment seat stood, but which was extended to the place itself in front of Pilate s praetorium , where that pavement was laid. This was proved by the practice of St. John, who elsewhere gives Aramaic names as distinctly belonging to places, not as mere translations of the Greek. This is proved also by the fact that Gabbatha is derived from a root meaning back , or elevation , which refers, not to the kind of pavement, but to the elevation of the place in question. It thus appears that the two names Lithostrotos and Gabbatha were due to different characteristics of the spot where Pilate condemned Jesus to death. The Aramaic name was derived from the configuration of that spot, the Greek name from the nature of its pavement. Efforts have been made by commentators to identify Gabbatha either with the outer court of the Temple, which is known to have been paved, or with the meeting place of the Great Sanhedrin, which was half within, half without that Temple ...   more details
