    Seven ships of the Royal Navy have been named HMS Prince of Wales , after numerous holders of the title the Prince of Wales . The coronet is sometimes referred to even by official sources as a crown. It is not known if Prince Frederick ever wore it. He died before he could inherit the throne. It was used both by his son, George III of the United Kingdom George III and his grandson, George IV of the United Kingdom George IV when each was Prince of Wales . However it was not worn after the 18th century, instead being carried on a cushion ahead of the Prince in possession.
