File Relief Ninsun Louvre AO2761.jpg thumb Ninsun, Neo Sumerian Period In Sumerian mythology , Ninsun or Ninsuna lady wild cow is a goddess, best known as the mother of the legendary hero Gilgamesh , and as the tutelary goddess of Gudea of Lagash . Her parents are the deities Anu and Uras mythology Uras . Myths In the Epic of Gilgamesh , Ninsun is depicted as a human queen who lives in Uruk with her son as king. Since the father of Gilgamesh was former king Lugalbanda , it stands to reason that Ninsun procreated with Lugalbanda to give birth. Also in the Epic of Gilgamesh , Ninsun is summoned by Gilgamesh and Enkidu to help pray to the god Utu to help the two on their journey to the Country of the Living to battle Humbaba . Names Ninsun is called Rimat Ninsun , the August cow , the Wild Cow of the Enclosure , and The Great Queen . In the Tello relief the ancient Lagash, 2150 BC her name is written with the cuneiform glyphs as DINGIR.NIN.GUL where the glyph for GUL is the same for SUN2. According to John Halloran s Sumerian Lexicon, the meaning of GUL is enormous and evil but also the verb to wreck, destroy utterly . The meaning of SUN2 is attested as cow . Notes Ninsun was called Gula in Sumerian Mythology until the name was later changed to Ninisina. Gula in the latter became a Babylonian goddess. Mesopotamian myth 50 Ninsun was originally named Nininsina, according to Pabilsag s journey to Nibru . According to the ancient Babylonian text, Nininsina wedded Pabilsag near a riverbank. Mthembu v Letsela and Another , ref 1997 2 SA 936 T . ref an important case in South African customary law , was heard in the Transvaal Province Transvaal Provincial Division by Le Roux J on November 21, 1996, with judgment handed down on November 25. The rule of African customary law which generally excludes African women from intestate succession was recognised by section 23 of the Black Administration Act ref Act 38 of 1927. ref and the regulations framed thereunder, especially regulation 2, promulgated on February 6, 1987, in Government Gazette 10601, as Government Notice R200, making black law and custom applicable to the devolution of the estate of a deceased black person. It was common cause in the present case that this system applied the principle of a male primogeniture The estate sought a male heir, whether a descendant or a parent or a grandparent. ref 938D E F G, read with 939F. ref The question that had to be considered was whether this rule of succession unfairly discriminated between persons on grounds of sex or gender, and was in conflict with the provisions of section 8 of the Interim Constitution. It was common cause that, in rural areas where this customary rule most frequently found its application, the devolution of the deceased s property unto the male heir involved a concomitant duty of support and protection of the woman or women to whom he was married by customary law, and of the children procreated under that system and belonging to a particular house. A widow in particular might remain at the deceased s homestead and continue to use the estate property, and the heir could not eject her at his whim. If it was accepted that the duty to provide sustenance, maintenance and shelter is a necessary corollary of the system of primogeniture, the court found, it was difficult to equate this form of differentiation between men and women with the concept of unfair discrimination as used in section 8 of the Constitution.
