The article is an attack on the intellectual culture in the United States which Chomsky argues is largely subservient to power. He is particularly critical of social scientists and technocrats who he believed were providing a pseudo scientific justification for the crimes of the state in particular those relating to the Vietnam War . He notes that those who opposed the war on moral rather than technical grounds are often psychologists, mathematicians, chemists, or philosophers...rather than people with Washington D.C. Washington contacts, who, of course, realize that had they a new, good idea about Vietnam, they would get a prompt and respectful hearing in Washington. The topic was inspired by articles of Dwight Macdonald published after the Second World War who asks the question To what extent were the German or Japanese people responsible for the atrocities committed by their governments? And, quite properly...turns the question back to us To what extent ... to Dwight Macdonald and the responsibility of intellectuals. Macdonald quotes an interview with a death ... that will be used to justify the next defense of freedom. 1. Comparative responsibility

Cleanup date September 2007 Tort law Comparative responsibility known as comparative fault in some jurisdictions is a doctrine of tort law that compares the fault of each party in a law suit for a single injury. Comparative responsibility may apply to intentional torts as well as negligence and encompasses the doctrine of comparative negligence . Fault is determined by examining how responsible each party is for causing the injury, as distinct from examining how much damage each party has directly caused. For instance a car driver may swerve into another lane, causing traffic behind him to pile up without the swerving car itself being involved in a collision, causing damage to several cars. Though the swerving driver has not directly caused any damage, s he is most at fault. Comparative responsibility divides the fault among parties by percentages, and then accordingly divides the money awarded to the plaintiff. The plaintiff may only recover the percentage of the damages he is not at fault for. If a plaintiff is found to be 25 at fault, he can recover only 75 of his damages. So, let s say, in our above example, one car that was in the pile up decides to sue everyone else who was on the road at that time in the area of the pile up. This one car sues all these people in one lawsuit, making all people on the road defendants in this one case. The jury would compare the responsibility of each defendant in this case, assigning fault to each one individually, based on the evidence in the trial .... Image Cmfr logo1.jpg thumb right CMFR logo History The formation of the Center for Media Freedom and Responsibility CMFR addresses one of the critical concerns confronting the Philippines after People Power toppled the Marcos dictatorship in February 1986. That concern calls attention to the power of the media and the role of the free press in the development of Philippine democracy. All over the world, press freedom has been found to be essential to the democratic system. Effective participatory government is possible only when it can count on a well informed society where individuals freely exchange ideas, and public debate and discussion arise from knowledge and understanding of national affairs. That freedom involves not only media professionals, but also the public served by the media public officials, the private sector, civil society groups, readers, viewers, and listeners who receive information and are a part of the cycle of public communication.
