for zones below. Many natural dams usually moraines containing the lake water have been reinforced with safety dams. Some 34 such dams have been built in the Cordillera Blanca to contain proglacial lakes. Several proglacial lakes have also formed in recent decades at the end of glaciers on the eastern side of New Zealand s Southern Alps . In geology , a proglacial lake is a lake formed either by the dam ming action of a moraine or ice dam during the retreat of a melting glacier , or by meltwater trapped against an ice sheet due to isostatic depression of the crust around the ice. At the end of the last ice age approximately 10,000 years ago, large proglacial lakes were a widespread feature in the northern hemisphere. In some cases, such lakes gradually evaporated during the warming period after the Quaternary ice age. In other cases, such as Glacial Lake Missoula and Glacial Lake Wisconsin in the United States, the sudden rupturing of the supporting dam caused glacial lake outburst flood s, the rapid and catastrophic release of dammed water resulting in the formation of gorges and other structures downstream from the former lake. Good examples of these structures can be found in the Channeled Scablands of eastern ... of Eastern Washington ref In Great Britain, Lake Lapworth , Lake Harrison and Lake Pickering were examples of proglacial lakes. 1. Lake Hitchcock

Unreferenced date January 2012 Lake Hitchcock was a glacial lake that formed approximately 15,000 years ago in the late Pleistocene epoch. After the Laurentide ice sheet retreated, glacial ice melt accumulated at the terminal moraine and blocked up the Connecticut River , creating the long, narrow lake. The lake existed for approximately 3,000 years, after which a combination of erosion and continuing geological changes likely caused it to drain. At its longest, Lake Hitchcock stretched from the moraine dam at present day Rocky Hill, Connecticut , to St. Johnsbury, Vermont about Convert 320 km mi . Although the rift valley through which the river flows above Rocky Hill actually continues south to New Haven, Connecticut New Haven , on Long Island Sound , the obstructing moraine at Rocky Hill diverted the river southeast to its present mouth at Old Saybrook, Connecticut Old Saybrook . Lake Hitchcock is an important part of the geology of Connecticut . It experienced annual layering of sediments, or varve s silt and sand in the summertime due to glacial meltwater and clay in the wintertime as the lake froze . These varve d lake deposits were later used by European settlers for brick making. The lake was named after Edward Hitchcock , a geologist from Amherst College who had studied it.
