Image Projected area hardness test.svg thumb 200px right Example of a projected area from a hardness indentation. Projected area is two dimensional area measurement of a three dimensional object by projecting its shape on to an arbitrary plane. This is often used in mechanical engineering related fields, specifically hardness testing, axial stress and terminal velocity . The geometrical definition of a projected area is the rectilinear parallel projection of a surface of any shape onto a plane . This translates into the equation math A projected int A cos beta , dA math where A is the original area, and math beta , math is the angle between the normal to the surface A and the normal to the arbitrary plane onto which we project. For basic shapes the results are listed in the table below. ref name rpfaq Citation last Palmer first James M. title Radiometry and photometry FAQ date 1999 07 08 url http www.optics.arizona.edu Palmer rpfaq rpfaq.pdf accessdate 2011 04 02 . ref class wikitable border 1 Projected area for basic shapes ref name rpfaq Shape Area Projected area Flat rectangle math A L times W math math A proj L times W cos beta math Circular disc math A pi r 2 math math A proj pi r 2 cos beta math Sphere math A 4 pi r 2 math math A proj frac A 4 pi r 2 math References Reflist Category Engineering Category Metalworking terminology engineering stub Metalworking stub ... more details

Projected dynamical systems is a mathematics mathematical theory investigating the behaviour of dynamical system s where solutions are restricted to a constraint set. The discipline shares connections to and applications with both the static world of Optimization mathematics optimization and Equilibrium point equilibrium problems and the dynamical world of ordinary differential equations . A projected dynamical system is given by the flow mathematics flow to the projected differential equation math frac dx t dt Pi K x t , F x t math where K is our constraint set. Differential equations of this form are notable for having a discontinuous vector field. A Linnebach lantern or Linnebach projector is a lens optics lens less projection system used in theater theatrical productions. It was developed by and named after Adolf Linnebach in the early 20th century. Since the middle of the 20th century, it has largely been replaced by other projection technologies. The lantern consists of a long case that is painted black on the inside. The case contains a high powered lamp. One side of the case is a transparent slide with the image that is to be projected. Projection is often done from behind onto a translucent material. A system of lenses can optionally be used to prevent distortion of the projected image.
