  1. McRoberts maneuver

The McRoberts maneuver is employed in case of shoulder dystocia during childbirth and involves hyperflexing the mother s legs tightly to her abdomen. This widens the pelvis, and flattens the spine in the lower back lumbar spine . If this maneuver does not succeed, an assistant applies pressure on the lower abdomen suprapubic pressure , and the delivered head is also gently pulled. The technique is effective in about 42 of cases. ref cite book last Kish first Karen coauthors Joseph V. Collea editor Alan H. 1. Jendrassik maneuver

File Gehuchten Jendrassik maneuver.JPG thumb upright The Jendrassik maneuver to reinforce knee jerk. The Jendrassik maneuver is a medical maneuver wherein the patient flexes both sets of fingers into a hook like form and interlocks those sets of fingers together. The tendon below the patient s knee is then hit with a reflex hammer to elicit the patellar reflex . The elicited response is compared with the reflex result of the same action when the maneuver is not in use. Often a larger reflex response will be observed when the patient is occupied with the maneuver, as the maneuver may prevent the patient from consciously inhibiting or influencing his or her response to the hammer. This effect was first observed in the late 19th century by Hungarian physician Erno Jendrassik , whom it was named after. This maneuver is particularly useful in that even if the patient is aware that the interlocking of fingers is just a distraction in order to elicit a larger reflex response, it still functions properly. The maneuver can also be used to distract patients when performing other tests or procedures, for example when looking for Romberg s sign , and any suitable distraction may be used. ref name pmid17195749 cite journal author Vereeck L, Truijen S, Wuyts FL, Van de Heyning PH title The dizziness handicap inventory and its relationship with functional balance performance journal Otology & neurotology official publication of the American Otological Society, American Neurotology Society and European Academy of Otology and Neurotology volume 28 issue 1 pages 87 93 year 2007 month January pmid 17195749 doi 10.1097 01.mao.0000247821.98398.0d url http meta.wkhealth.com pt pt core template ... 1. Müller's maneuver

M ller s Manoeuvre After a forced expiration, an attempt at inspiration is made with closed mouth and nose, whereby the negative pressure in the chest and lungs is made very subatmospheric the reverse of Valsalva manoeuvre . This technique is designed to look for collapsed sections of airways such as the Vertebrate trachea trachea and upper airways. In this maneuver, the patient attempts to inhale with his mouth closed and his nostrils plugged, which leads to a collapse of the airway. Introducing a flexible fiberoptic scope into the hypopharynx to obtain a view, the examiner may witness the collapse and identify weakened sections of the airway. M ller s maneuver is used to help determine the cause of sleep apnea . A positive test results means the site of upper airway obstruction is likely below the level of the soft palate, and the patient will probably not benefit from a uvulopalatopharyngoplasty alone. This maneuver is very helpful in doing MRI for sleep apnoea, when sedation to patient can be avoided. There is some evidence that the sites of obstruction with Muller s manoeuvre do not represent reliably the sites of obstruction during normal sleep. Other factors such as the body s position whilst conducting the manoeuvre may well affect this. References Textbook of Medical Physiology p784 Arthur C. 1. Queckenstedt's maneuver

Queckenstedt s maneuver is an outdated clinical test, formerly used for diagnosing spinal stenosis . The test is performed by placing the patient in the lateral decubitus position, thereafter the clinician performs a lumbar puncture . The opening pressure is measured. Then, the clinician s assistant compresses both jugular veins if increased intracranial pressure is not suspected then one may exert pressure on both external jugular veins but usually pressure is first exerted on the abdomen, this pressure causes an engorgement of spinal veins and in turn rapidly increases CSF pressure , which leads to a rise in the intracranial pressure . Given normal anatomy, the intracranial pressure will be reflected as a rapidly rising pressure measured from the lumbar needle, within 10 12 seconds. If there is a stenosis in the spine, there will be a damped, delayed response in the lumbar pressure, thus a positive Queckenstedt s maneuver. Nowadays this test has been made mostly superfluous by superior imaging modalities like MRI and Computed tomography CAT . ref cite journal last Pearce first JMS author authorlink coauthors date year 2006 month June day title Queckenstedt s manoeuvre journal J Neurol Neurosurg Psychiatry volume 77 series issue 6 page 728 pages 728 publisher location issn pmid 16705195 pmc 2077443 doi 10.1136 jnnp.2005.083618 bibcode oclc id url language format accessdate laysummary laysource laydate quote ref The test is named after Hans Heinrich Georg Queckenstedt who described it in 1916. ref Queckenstedt HHG. 1. Sellick maneuver

The sellick maneuver is the common term for applied cricoid pressure during tracheal intubation .
