The park was at one time the only skatepark in the world to feature a capsule a full pipe connected to a cradle . The park was built by Grindline Skateparks in 2003 and is the second largest concrete skatepark in Ohio behind the Kettering street plaza . The park features both cement and concrete coping. It has ramps of all sizes and many unique spots. The park is a work in progress. Nearly every year at least one new object is built in or onto the park. During the summer of 2005 a stage was built and with the insertion of electricity in January 2006 bands can play the stage and events can proceed with ease. Obstacles include one 7 foot wide mini ramp, two 3 foot wide quarter pipes, one 7 foot wide quarter pipe, one funbox, and four 1 foot tall by 6 feet long flat rails. One of the rails is placed in a strange position and serves as a very uncomfortable bench to the locals. The park is open from 9 am until sunset, daily. Park Rangers visit the park to check upon those using the facility to ensure that the helmet law is being enforced. Rangers have been known to hand out 400 dollar tickets to those who get caught riding without one. Oftentimes they leave you with a warning not to return that day. Bikes are not allowed because the ramps were not designed for the repeated heavy forces they administer, but they show up in swarms almost daily leaving the ramps with upturned metal plates at the bottom creating hazardous obstacles that often result in the injuries of those whom the park was designed to cater too. The Park itself is relatively small, roughly the size of a fast food restaurant, yet it is supposed to accommodate for the growing skateboard population not to mention the large amount of scooterers and rollerbladers who seek a legal safe haven for their recreation. It would seem that 10 people is the highest number for a comfortable experience there. Creation Construction of the Carolina Beach SkatePark was completed in June 2007. After five long years of discussion and debate, the Town of Carolina Beach, NC, opened the gate to the towns first public skatepark. Town officials and citizens alike, finally agreed upon the location of the park. Original plans called for the park to be built behind the Carolina Beach Town Recreation Center, but do to noise ordinances and concerned residents, the park had to be built in Mike Chappell Park, located at the middle of the island off of Dow Rd. Admission is free, which is unlike other skate parks of the area. The Skatebarn in Hampstead NC has a membership fee, and Wilmington s city skatepark at Greenfield Lake Park costs a couple of dollars each visit. Hours of operation are also unlike any other of the area. The park opens at first light and stays open until the last of the huge baseball outfield floodlights are shut off at nine thirty at night. It is an all concrete park, with the exception of some Coping architecture coping and three metal rails. The park cost a little over 200,000 to build and is convert 4600 sqft m2 . Attractions The main attraction of the park is the kidney shaped pool in the center of the park. It is eight feet at the deepest end and around four feet in the shallows.
