Image Madonna71.jpg right thumb 250px Enthroned Madonna of Guido of Siena, c. 1270 80. commons category Guido da Siena Guido of Siena , was an Italy Italian Byzantine art Byzantine style painter of the 13th century. The name Guido is known from the large panel in the church of S. Domenico in Siena of the http www.wga.hu frames e.html? html g guido index.html Virgin and Child Enthroned . The rhymed Latin inscription gives the painter s name as Guido de Senis, with the date 1221. However, this date cannot relate to the painting of the panel, which is usually dated on the basis of style to the 1270s. The faces of the Virgin and Child were scraped and repainted in the early 14th century in the manner of Duccio and so are not representative of Guido s original. A Dossal of the Virgin and Child with four saints accession No. 7 in the Siena Pinacoteca has an identical inscription, but unfortunately the name before de Senis has been cut off. It is very often assumed that the missing name is Guido, and gives us some indication of the original appearance of the Madonna at San Domenico. Beyond this, little is known of Guido da Siena and his place in Sienese painting before Duccio. Because he is the only Sienese painter of the time to have surviving works on panel with a signature, he is often viewed as the most important artistic personality at the time and the first master of the great Sienese school of painting. ref improve date November 2011 In the Catholic Church , the Council of Siena 1423 1424 marked a somewhat inconclusive stage in the Conciliarism Conciliar movement that was attempting reforms in the Church. If it had continued, it would have qualified as an ecumenical council. In the official Ecumenical council List of ecumenical councils , the Council of Siena is no longer listed, as the conciliarism expressed there was later branded as a heresy . According to the terms of the Council of Constance calling for periodic ecumenical councils to discuss church policies, Pope Martin V convened a council at Pavia , which was hardly inaugurated on April 23, 1423, when plague broke out at Pavia and the council was hastily adjourned to Siena . At Siena, the procedure of the Council followed that established Council of Constance at Constance . Right at the start, certain formalities of the safe conducts issued by the city for the members of the Council were the cause of jurisdictional friction with papal prerogatives.
