On the basis of the General Rules for Archives published in 1983, historical archives were being expanded at the provincial and county levels. Two of the most important archives were the First Historical Archives of China FHAC , located in Beijing containing the archives of the Ming Dynasty Ming and Qing Dynasty Qing dynasties, and the Second Historical Archives of China SHAC , located in Nanjing containing the archives of the Guomindang period. And the Central Archives the State Archives Administration contains the archives of the Communist Party and the People s Republic. A number of foreign scholars have been granted access to these archives. In 1987 public and research libraries still faced serious space, management, and service problems. Even with the special efforts being made to solve these problems, it was clear that they would not be quickly resolved. In the late 1980s, China was experiencing an active educational and cultural life. Students were staying in school longer, educational standards were being raised, and facilities were being improved. Intellectuals were encouraged to develop their expertise , especially in the scientific and technical spheres, and a wide variety of traditional and modern literary and art forms were allowed to flourish. This situation was likely to continue as long as it served the interest of economic modernization and posed no threat to the political establishment. It holds over 20,000 collection level descriptions of archives on all manner of subjects, and also has thousands of descriptions of series or of individual items within collections. The Hub has nearly 200 contributors across the UK. Each description on the Hub provides a link to the contact details for the repository that holds the archive. unreferenced date April 2008 The Royal Archives , also known as the Queen s Archives, are a division of the Royal Household of the Monarch Sovereign of the United Kingdom . It is operationally under the control of the Keeper of the Royal Archives , who is customarily the Private Secretary to the Sovereign . Although Sovereigns have kept records for centuries, The Queen s Archives were formally established as recently as 1911. Since 1912 they have been in the Round Tower of Windsor Castle , and now also occupy the adjacent Norman Gateway. Recent files and those currently in use are retained at Buckingham Palace . The Queen s Archives comprise the Keeper, an Assistant Keeper of the Queen s Archives, and professional staff under a Registrar. The Registrar of the Queen s Archives, known as Recorder until the 1950s, is the archivist in charge of day to day work in the archives. There are several Assistant Registrars, as well as a small clerical staff. The Curator of the Photograph Collection, who looks after the 400,000 photographs in the royal collection, is now responsible to the Director of the Royal Collection .
