The Psalter was Published by Liturgical Training Publications in 1995 with the imprimatur of Cardinal William Henry Keeler . The approval of Keeler, the president of the USCCB , paved the way for its use in RomanCatholic liturgy in the United States. Together with Basil I s Gregory Nazianzus Homilies of St Gregory Nazianzus , the Paris Psalter is considered a key monument of the so called Macedonian Renaissance in Byzantine art during the 10th century. The most famous miniature depicts David playing the harp at the side of the seated female figure of Melody illustrated, to the right . Around this central group are the figure of Echo mythology Echo , various animals charmed by music, and even a male figure symbolising the town of Bethlehem . The whole composition was likely modelled on a Greco Roman wall painting representing Orpheus charming the world with his music. This and other miniatures are so Hellenistic in execution and so unlike the received notion of what medieval art in general and Byzantine art in particular should look like, that most 19th century authorities dated the manuscript to the time of Justinian . The Byzantists Hugo Buchthal and Kurt Weitzmann , however, conclusively demonstrated that the book was created in the 10th century. The Ramsey Psalter Harleian Collection Harley MS 2904 is an illuminated manuscript of the tenth century. Its script and decoration suggest that it was made at Winchester , but certain liturgical features have suggested that it was intended for use at the Benedictine monastery of Ramsey , or for the personal use of Ramsey s founder Oswald of Worcester St Oswald . The litany includes a gold lettered triple invocation of St Benedict of Nursia, and at the time of writing, probably before Oswald s death in 992, Ramsey was the only monastery dedicated to this saint. Unsurprisingly for a manuscript with such strong connections to a monastic reformer like Oswald, the decoration shows strong Continental influence, including a famous tinted line drawing of the Crucifixion executed in the style of the Utrecht Psalter , and in its painted panels shows use of Acanthus ornament acanthus , a popular form of decoration on the Continent at this time equally, however, there is use of insular interlace visual arts interlace designs. ref J Backhouse, DH Turner and L Webster ed. The Southampton Psalter Cambridge St John s College, Cambridge St John s College MS C.9 is an Insular art Insular illuminated manuscript illuminated Psalter from Ireland. It is asserted by some to be from ninth century in date, while other scholars have argued for a tenth or even early eleventh century dating. It has illuminations including three full page miniatures and also contains numerous annotations in both Latin and Old Irish . In the tradition of Irish psalters, the 150 psalms are divided into three groups of fifty, each headed by a full page miniature facing a text page with decorated initial and border. The figures in the miniatures are highly stylised in the tradition of Irish manuscripts at this time, and painted in a palette of yellow, purple and red. The three full page miniatures show David in two scenes with animals, a Crucifixion of Jesus and David and Goliath . The Pahlavi Psalter is the name given to a 12 page non contiguous section of a Middle Persian translation of a Syriac language Syriac book of Book of Psalms psalms . The Pahlavi Psalter was discovered in 1905 by the second German Turpan expedition under Albert von Le Coq . Together with a mass of other fragmentary Christian manuscripts discovered in the ruins of the library of Shui pang at Bulayiq near Turpan, in what is today the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region of China , the documents were sent to Berlin for analysis, where the fragments remain today. The Pahlavi Psalter is the oldest surviving example of Pahlavi literature , that is, literature composed using the Pahlavi script Pahlavi writing system . The surviving fragments probably date to the 6th or 7th century CE. The translation itself dates to not before the mid 6th century since it reflects liturgical additions to the Syriac original by Mar Aba I , who was List of Patriarchs of the Church of the East Patriarch of the Church of the East c. 540 552. cf. Andreas, 1910 869 872 The script of the psalter, like that of all other examples of Pahlavi literature, is also an Aramaic alphabet Aramaic derived script see Pahlavi script Pahlavi for details . However, unlike Book Pahlavi script, which is a later but more common form of the consonantary and has 12 or 13 grapheme s, the script of the psalms has 5 symbols more. The variant of the script used for the psalter was for almost a century the only evidence of that specific variant, which consequently came to be referred to as Psalter Pahlavi script. More recently however, another sample of the writing was discovered in the inscriptions on a bronze processional cross found at Herat in present day Afghanistan . Due to the dearth of comparable material, some words and phrases in both sources remain undeciphered.
