Psathopyrgos is located on the Gulf of Corinth , southeast of Cape Drepano , the northernmost point of the Peloponnese peninsula. It is 2 km northeast of Drepano, Achaea Drepano and 9 km northeast of Rio. The Greek National Road 8A Patras Aigio Corinth and the railway from Patras to Corinth pass south of the village. The community Psathopyrgos consists of the villages Psathopyrgos and Kato Rodini. It is the northernmost mountain range in the Peloponnese . The highest point is 1,928  m, variously given at 1,924, 1,925, and 1,926  m. The mountain is home to two mountain shelter shelters , Greece s largest wind farm with 40 generators, which opened in 2006, and two communications stations. Snow is common in areas over 1,000  m in the winter. Paragliding is common in areas under 1,100  m. Due to overgrazing , frequent forest fires, and the appropriation of land for housing, the mountain s ecology and soil have Soil retrogression and degradation suffered greatly , to the extent that much of the soil is now barren or can only support herbaceous vegetation. The range is sparsely forested, mainly on its western and southern slopes, while the most fertile areas lie on the eastern and western slopes. The service, operated by TrainOSE uses infrastructure of the Hellenic Railways Organisation OSE . ref The brand name Proastiakos correct spelling is Proasteiakos which translates as suburban , is derived from ancient Greek proasteion suburb, , pro asty meaning before the city . However the same brand name has also been used for some regional rail services. ref In Athens, the service connects the port of Piraeus and the Athens Central Railway Station with Athens International Airport , while also providing commuter rail links to Kiato , via Corinth and to Chalcis . There are plans to extend the Proastiakos service to Loutraki and Xylokastro west of Athens , Chalkis and Thiva north of Athens and to Rafina and Lavrio in southeast Attica .
