psychoanalysis The term psychicapparatus also psychical apparatus , mental apparatus denotes a central, theoretic construct of Sigmund Freud Freudian metapsychology , wherein quote We assume that mental life is the function of an apparatus to which we ascribe the characteristics of being extended in space and of being made up of several portions Id, ego, and super ego Id, ego, super ego . Freud, An Outline of Psychoanalysis 1940 As a Ego psychology psychologist , Sigmund Freud used the German terms psychischer Apparat and seelischer Apparat , about the functioning of which he elaborates quote We picture the unknown apparatus, which serves the activities of the mind, as being really like an instrument constructed of several parts which we speak of as agencies , each of which performs a particular function, and which have a fixed, spatial relation to one another it being understood that by spatial relation in front of and behind , superficial and deep we merely mean, in the first instance, a representation of the regular succession of the functions. Freud, The Question of Lay Analysis 1926 Freud proposed the psychicapparatus as solely a theoretic construct explaining the functioning of the mind , and not a Neurology neurologic structure of the brain quote It is a hypothesis , like so many others in the sciences the very earliest ones have always been rather rough. Open to revision , we can say in such cases . . . the value of a fiction of this kind . . . depends on how much one can achieve with its help. Freud, The Question of Lay Analysis 1926 Moreover, in emphasizing the immateriality of the psychicapparatus, Dr. Freud dismissed the matter of its physical substance quote That is not a subject of psychological interest. Ego psychology Psychology can be as indifferent to it as, for instance, optics can be to the question of whether the walls of a telescope are made of metal or cardboard. We shall leave entirely to one side the material line of approach. Freud, The Question ... more details

Image Kipp apparatus.jpg thumb Kipp apparatus Kipp s apparatus , also called Kipp generator , is an apparatus designed for preparation of small volumes of gas es. It was invented around 1860 by the Dutch pharmacist Petrus Jacobus Kipp and widely used in chemical laboratories and for demonstrations in schools into the second half of the 20th century. It later fell out of use, at least in laboratories, because most gases then became available in small gas cylinder s. These industrial gases are much purer and drier than those initially obtained from a Kipp apparatus without further processing. Design and operation The apparatus is made of three vertically stacked cylinders, roughly resembling a snowman. The solid material e.g., iron sulfide is placed into the middle cylinder, the acid is put into the top cylinder. A tube extends from the top cylinder into the bottom cylinder. The middle cylinder has a tube with a stopcock attached, which is used to draw off the evolved gas. When the stopcock is closed, the pressure of the gas in the middle cylinder rises and expels the acid back into the top cylinder, until it is not in contact with the solid material anymore, and the chemical reaction stops. Kipp generators only work properly in the described manner if the solid material is insoluble in the acid. They are usually made of glass , or sometimes of polyethylene . Examples for prepared gases and their educts Hydrogen from zinc flakes and hydrochloric acid Carbon dioxide from pieces of marble calcium carbonate and hydrochloric acid Hydrogen sulfide from iron II sulfide and hydrochloric acid Acetylene from calcium carbide and water Chlorine from potassium permanganate or manganese dioxide and hydrochloric acid For further reading cite book last Green first John Joseph title Chemical ... apparatus PPA617,M1 cite journal author Sella, Andrea title Kipp s Apparaatus journal Chemistry World ... Ellacombe apparatus is a method for performing change ringing of church bells requiring only one person. Unlike the traditional method, where the bells are spun 360 degrees to sound them and one person is needed for each bell, instead the bells are kept static and a hammer is struck against the inside of the bell. Each hammer is connected by a rope to a fixed frame in the bell ringing room. The ropes are taut, and pulling one of the ropes towards the operator will strike the hammer against the bell. The system was devised by Reverend Henry Thomas Ellacombe of Gloucestershire, who first had such a system installed in Bitton in 1821. It is believed he created the system to make bell ringers redundant, so churches did not have to tolerate the behaviour of unruly bell ringers just so they could have their bells expertly rung. The Ellacombe apparatus has been removed from many towers in the UK , but there are still visible holes in the ceiling which the ropes would come through into the ringing chamber, and often the frames are still in the ringing chamber, without ropes. In towers where the apparatus remains intact, it is generally used like a Carillon to play tunes. This piece was done upon Dal s return from 9 months of military duty. It was during his military career that Dal began experimenting with new subjects for his work. The Apparatus in the title refers to the geometric figure which is structured much like the human form. The figure has analogues of human arms, legs, an eye, and a head. The triangular being is propped up on what appears to be a cane, which was a leitmotif in Dali s work representing the fragility of sleep.
