Controversy There is great controversy over the relevance and importance of political criticism in civilizations, particularly democratic societies . Those who contend that it is of vast importance assert that political discussion creates and promotes the variety of opinions necessary for a true democracy. The American constitution is often pointed to as support for the belief, ensuring for all peoples under its administration such maxims as free speech . Critics of this philosophy affirm instead that the general public and, on a more individual basis, the Average Joe lacks the resources and capability to conceive opinions that are educated enough to be taken seriously. Thus, the abundance and fervent promotion of such opinions merely confuses and complicates political matters that, given an appropriate amount of factual education, are either easily understood or should be discussed only by those with sufficient intelligence to do the matter justice. 1. Genre criticism

Genre criticism is a method within rhetorical criticism for analysing speeches and writing according to the symbolic Artifact archaeology artifacts they contain. In rhetoric , the theory of genre provides a means to classify and compare artifacts of communication and to assess their effectiveness and or contribution to a community. By grouping artifacts with others of similar formal features or rhetorical exigencies, rhetorical critics can shed light on how authors use or flout conventions in order to meet their needs. Genre criticism has thus become one of the main methodologies within rhetorical criticism. While genres have been used to classify speeches and works of literature since the time of Aristotle , genre did not emerge as a critical tool to describe and analyze texts until the 20th century. Since then, genre criticism has taken three turns. The first turn, represented by Mikhail Mikhailovich Bakhtin , among others, focused on the formal features of communication. The second turn, represented by Carolyn Miller, among others, focused on recurring socio cultural circumstances. 1. Rhetorical criticism

Rhetorical criticism is an approach to criticism that is at least as old as Plato . In the Phaedrus dialogue Phaedrus , Plato has Socrates examine a speech by Lysias to determine whether or not it is praiseworthy. Rhetorical criticism analyzes symbolic artifacts including words, phrases, images, gestures, performances, texts, films, and discourse in general to discover how, and how well, they work how they instruct, inform, entertain, move, arouse, perform, convince and, in general, persuade their audience, including whether and how they might improve their audience. In short, rhetorical criticism seeks to understand how symbols act on people. C riticism is an art, not a science.
