In antiquity it was a place of worship, because it was believed to be the cave where the goddess Rhea mythology Rhea Zeus Infancy hid the infant Zeus , in order to protect him from his father Cronus . According to a variant of this legend, the Kouretes , a band of mythical warriors, undertook to dance their wild, noisy war dances in front of the cave, so that the clamour would keep Cronus from hearing the infant s crying. Kampoi lang el is a village in the municipal unit of Keramia on the island of Crete , Greece . It is built on a small plateau on the northern slope of Keramos mountain peak Keramos , a peak of the White mountains Lefka Ori . It is located 26.4 km south of Chania at 500m a.s.l. It has 147 inhabitants. There are three more small villages which together with Kampoi form a community, which is part of the municipal unit of Keramia Geroprinos 45 inhabitants Madaro 33 Tsakistra 45 During the revolutions of the 19th century, it was the center of the Cretan revolutionists. A famous revolutionist hainis of this period, Ioannis Moutsakis was born here. From Kampoi you may start for the Psychro Pigadi refuge at an altitude of 1450 m where until recent years, the only access was by foot, a location with view virtually to the whole north part of the prefecture. Ismail Selim Pasha lang el , ca. 1809 1867 , also known as Ismail Ferik Pasha , was an Khedivate of Egypt Egyptian general of Greek language Greek origin. Few details of his life are available. Early life Ismail Selim was born Emmanouil or Ioannis Kampanis lang el around 1809 in the village of Psychro , located at the Lasithi Plateau on the island of Crete . He was the eldest son of priest Fragios Kampanis lang el who was slaughtered in 1823 by the Ottoman Empire Ottomans during the Greek War of Independence . Emmanouil and his younger brother Antonios lang el were captured by the Ottoman forces under Hassan Pasha who seized the plateau and were sold as slaves. Military career Selim was sold to Egypt where he converted to Islam and was admitted to the Egyptian Military Academy . After graduating, he pursued a military career and fought with Ibrahim Pasha of Egypt Ibrahim in the Egyptian Ottoman War 1831 1833 campaigns in Syria . Selim rose quickly to the rank of Ferik rank Ferik major general and was appointed the military minister of the state of Egypt. Return to Crete and death In 1866, Selim replaced Shaheen Pasha in the command of over 20,000 Egyptian troops sent by the Khedive of Egypt Isma il Pasha to assist the Ottomans in quelling the Cretan Revolt 1866 1869 great revolt on his native land. By a coincidence of fate, Cretan revolutionaries were receiving supplies and financial support from Selim s brother Antonios who lived in Athens . Antonios had been sold to Istanbul and later managed to escape to Odessa where he prospered under the protection of the Stourtza family and became very wealthy.
