The Ptolemyworldmap is a map of the known world to Western society in the 2nd century AD. It was based on the description contained in Ptolemy s book Geographia Ptolemy Geographia , written c. 150. Although authentic maps have never been found, the Geographia contains thousands of references to various parts of the old world, with coordinates for most, which allowed cartographers to reconstruct Ptolemy s world view when the manuscript was re discovered around 1300 AD. Perhaps the most significant contribution of Ptolemy and his maps is the first uses of longitudinal and latitudinal lines and the specifying of terrestrial locations by celestial observations. It was the Oprah s Book Club selection for December 1999. It was made into a movie released in 1999 starring Sigourney Weaver , Julianne Moore , David Strathairn , Chlo Sevigny , Louise Fletcher and Marc Donato with a soundtrack by Pat Metheny . Plot summary The book is concerned with how one seemingly inconsequential moment can alter lives forever. Alice Goodwin, mother of two, school nurse and wife of an aspiring dairy farmer in Wisconsin, is getting ready to take her two daughters and her best friend, Theresa s two little girls to their farm pond to swim. When she goes upstairs to find her bathing suit, Lizzy, Theresa s 2 year old, slips away to the pond and drowns. It all goes downhill from there. The town tramp, whom Alice reprimanded for constantly bringing her sick son to school, accuses Alice of molesting her child. The entire town turns on the Goodwin family, fairly new to the area, and several other mothers come forward with tales of Alice s abuse . Imprisonment, trial and loss of the farm ensue and Alice s husband and Theresa become involved. In 1943, S ren Poulsen , the creator of the World Map, was working on the drainage of the surrounding meadows. He found a stone shaped like Jutland , which inspired him to create a small world of his own. During the winter months, with the use of primitive tools, big stones were placed carefully on the ice and when spring arrived they could easily be tilted into place, and slowly the World Map took shape. The World Map was created between 1944 and 1969, and measures 45 metres by 90 metres 49 yards by 98 yards . One convert 111 km mi adj on degree angle degree of latitude corresponds to 27 centimetres 11 inch es on the map. The WorldMap 1 2,500,000 lang ru 1 2,500,000 is an internationally standardized and edited map series . The term or in transcription Karta Mira is now commonly used to describe this series, even outside the Soviet Union or Russia . The Karta Mira consists of a total of 224 main sheets and 38 overlap sheets. They depict the entire earth land and water surfaces according to a uniform scale, coloring and drawing system. The Karta Mira 1956 1975 was produced by cartographers from Bulgaria , Czechoslovakia , the German Democratic Republic , Hungary , Poland , Romania and the Soviet Union. The production of a 1 2,500,000 scale map of the world had been discussed since the late 1940s, partly because many cartographers were dissatisfied with the work on the International Map of the World or Millionth Map , after its scale of 1 1,000,000 . Due to the destruction of the Central Bureau of the Map of the World in London during World War II , the Millionth Map had suffered a serious setback, and it was uncertain whether that series could ever be completed. The initiative for the production of the Karta Mira was taken by cartographers from Hungary Alexander Rad , Peter Halasz, E. Foldi, Istvan Joo , the Soviet Union Grigory A. Ginzburg . , Ilya Andreyevich Kutuzov and the GDR Erfried Haack, Horst Nischan, Manfred Pateisat . Production of the 262 sheets was divided between the Geodetic Services of the participating countries. Thus, the sheets to be produced in the GDR were printed by VEB Hermann Haack Geographisch Kartographische Anstalt Gotha and VEB Kombinat Geod sie und Kartographie in Leipzig and Potsdam .
