    The Public Welfare Medal is awarded by the U.S. United States National Academy of Sciences National Academy of Sciences in recognition of distinguished contributions in the application of science to the public welfare. It is the most prestigious honor conferred by the Academy. First awarded in 1914, the medal has been awarded annually since 1976. In 2000 union government expenditures on social services includes education, health, family welfare, women and child development, and social justice andempowerment , rural development, and basic minimum services were approximately US 7.7 billion Rs361.7 billion , which was 11.1 percent of total government expenditures and 1.7 percent of gross domestic product GDP . The union and state governments maintain reserved seats in political and education institutions for lower castes, indigenous persons, and others based on their percentage of the population.
