  1. Address Point

Address Point is a mapping GIS data product supplied by Great Britain s national mapping agency, Ordnance Survey . It is based on the UK s postal mail organisation, the Royal Mail , list of postal addresses, Postcode Address File PAF . The most significant difference between Royal Mail list and Address Point is that Address Point includes the geographic coordinates of each postal address. This enables users to map the individual addresses. The Ordnance Survey website describes Address Point as a dataset that uniquely defines and locates residential, business and public postal addresses in Great Britain. It is created by matching information from Ordnance Survey digital map databases with more than 26 million addresses recorded in the Royal Mail Postcode Address File PAF . Each address has a unique Ordnance Survey Address Point reference OSAPR . In addition, Address Point carries a status flag to define the quality and accuracy of each address as well as indicators for change and source currency. OSAPRs are always 18 characters long and must start with the letters AP. The history of Ordnance Survey s spatial address information goes back to the 1840s when the first large scale maps were published with names identifying prominent properties such as large landmark houses in a locality. In 1945, when Ordnance Survey had moved to the National Grid system, maps at 1 1250 and 1 2500 scales showed sufficient information to infer other individual addresses. The recording of address information in large scale data has been ongoing ever since. Address Point, which was launched in the early 1990s, was the first address specific product in digital form. 1. Care-of address

refimprove date December 2009 Used in Internet routing, a care of address usually referred to as CoA is a temporary IP address for a mobile device . This allows a home agent to forward messages to the mobile device. A separate address is required because the IP address of the device that is used as host identification is topologically incorrect it does not match the network of attachment. The care of address splits the dual nature of an IP address, that is, its use is to identify the host and the location within the global IP network. Address assignment The care of address can be acquired by the mobile Node networking node in two different ways Foreign agent care of address FACoA The mobile node receives the same CoA as the Foreign agent Mobile IP foreign agent . All mobile nodes in the foreign network are given the same CoA. Co located care of address Each mobile node in the foreign network is assigned its own CoA, usually by a DHCP server. This might happen in a network where the foreign agent has not been deployed yet. Given the imminent IPv4 address exhaustion , the first solution is more frequently chosen, Citation needed date May 2009 because it does not waste a public IP address for every mobile node when changing network location, as the collocated CoA does. The care of address has to be a valid IP address within the foreign network, so that it allows the mobile node to receive and make connections with any host in the outside. 1. NSAP address

Unreferenced date October 2009 Context date October 2009 A Network Service Access Point address NSAP address , defined in ISO IEC 8348, is an identifying label for a Service Access Point SAP used in OSI model OSI networking. These are roughly comparable to IP address es used in the Internet Protocol they can specify a piece of equipment connected to an Asynchronous Transfer Mode ATM network. A specific stream, analogous to a TCP IP Computer port software port or Berkeley sockets socket , is specified by using a Transport Service Access Point TSAP . ATM can also use a Presentation PSAP and Session SSAP Access Point, but these may also be unspecified this is up to the application. NSAP addresses are allocated by the International Organization for Standardization ISO , through a system of delegated authorities, which are generally national standards organizations. One of the schemes to generate NSAPs uses E.164 which is the addressing format describing telephone numbers. NSAP addresses do not specify where a network terminal is located. Routing equipment must translate NSAP addresses to SNPA s SubNetwork Point of Attachment to route OSI packets Virtual Circuit Identifier VCI Virtual Circuit Identifier numbers are an example of a datalink layer SNPAs in ATM when OSI packets are sent encapsulated in IP packets the IP address is considered an SNPA. Currently SDH SONET networks are a major part of the network infrastructure and NSAPs are used extensively. 1. Return address

Other uses Unreferenced date August 2008 In postal mail , a return address is an explicit inclusion of the address of the person sending the message. It provides the recipient and sometimes authorized intermediaries with a means to determine how to respond to the sender of the message if needed. The return address need not include a sender s name, but should include address geography address or Post Office box P.O. box details in the same way as the delivery address should. In some countries, the return address is conventionally located in the upper left hand corner of the envelope , card, or label. In the United Kingdom , the return address is usually placed on the reverse of the envelope, near the top. Businesses often use envelopes preprinted with a return address. Many individuals have sheets of adhesive labels preprinted with their home address to affix to their correspondence. Charities sometimes include such sheets in mailshots. Rolls of Return Address Labels can be purchased from companies that sell personalized labels to provide individuals an easy way to peel and stick return address labels to their envelopes. The return address is not required on postal mail. However, lack of a return address prevents the postal service from being able to return the item if it proves undeliverable such as from damage, postage due , or invalid destination. Such mail may thus become dead letter mail . Should the return address be of a different state or country, the mail may be routed through that location for ease of return. 1. Host address

Context date October 2009 The host address , or the host ID portion of an IP address , is the portion of the address used to identify hosts any device requiring a Network Interface Card , such as a Personal computer PC or networked printer on the network. Example Your local network has an address of 192.168.1.0 30 using CIDR notation for this Subnetwork subnet . Your network ID is the first 30 bits, in bold below. The host portion is the last two bits. 1. Logical address

Unreferenced date October 2009 In computing , a logical address is the address at which an item memory cell, storage element, network host appears to reside from the perspective of an executing application program . A logical address may be different from the physical address due to the operation of an address translator or mapping function. Such mapping functions may be, in the case of a computer memory architecture, a memory management unit MMU between the CPU and the memory bus, or an address translation layer, e.g., the Data Link Layer , between the hardware and the internetworking protocols Internet Protocol in a computer networking system. Computer memory The physical address of computer memory banks may be mapped to different logical addresses for various purposes. For example, the same physical memory may appear at two different logical addresses and if accessed by the program at one address, data will pass through the CPU cache whereas if it is accessed at the other address, it will bypass the cache. In a system supporting virtual memory , there may actually not be any physical memory mapped to a logical address until an access is attempted. The access triggers special functions of the operating system which reprogram the MMU to map the address to some physical memory, perhaps writing the old contents of that memory to disk and reading back from disk what the memory should contain at the new logical address. In this case, the logical address may be referred to as a virtual address . An address decoder is also referred to as a demultiplexer or demux, although these terms are more general and can refer to devices other than address decoders. The 74154 mentioned above can be called a 4 to 16 demux. Address decoders are fundamental building blocks for systems that use buses. They are represented in all integrated circuit families and processes and in all standard FPGA and ASIC ... 1. Gateway address

About Internet Protocol address other uses Gateway disambiguation Gateway The Gateway Address or Default ... to send packets out of the local network. The gateway has both a physical and logical address. Logical Gateway Address The gateway operates at the Computer network Network layer Layer 3 of the OSI ... over a network, the Destination IP address is examined. If the Destination IP is outside of the network ... network as the end devices. The gateway address must have the same Subnet Mask as the host devices. Each host on the network uses the same gateway. The gateway should have a static address as changing the address would cause packets to not be delivered. The gateway is typically assigned either the highest or lowest address on the network. This is not a requirement, but many organizations use a consistent addressing scheme to make network planning easier. Physical Gateway Address The gateway also operates at the Data Link layer Layer 2 of the OSI Network Model. The physical gateway address is known as the Media Access Control MAC address or Burned In Address BIA . The physical address ... is being sent to a device that is not on the local network, the gateway s MAC address is used in the Frame networking Frame Header. Proxy ARP If a network device is looking for an address outside of the local network, it will send an Address Resolution Protocol ARP Request. Since the destination ... with its own MAC address as if it was the destination device. Once the frame is sent to the gateway, it will route it according to its routing table . Configuring a Gateway Address The gateway address must be configured on each host. The network host IP interface binds the gateway address to the MAC address of the physical gateway by Broadcasting networking broadcasting IP datagrams and caching the MAC address of the reply from the gateway in an Arp table stored on the host. The gateway address may be added manually. On Windows computers, the gateway address is configured using the TCP IP Properties ...   more details
