  1. Publication ban

Refimprove date October 2010 Globalize date December 2010 A publication ban is a court order which prohibits the public or media from disseminating certain details of an otherwise public judicial procedure. In Canada , publication bans are most commonly issued when the safety or reputation of a victim or witness may be hindered by having their identity openly broadcast in the press. They are also commonly issued when the crime involves minors or is sexual in nature. In countries where press freedom is the norm, an actual ban on publication is used mostly for ongoing court cases where publicity may affect the case. 1. Response bias

Response bias is a type of cognitive bias which can affect the results of a statistical survey if respondents answer questions in the way they think the questioner wants them to answer rather than according to their true belief s. This may occur if the questioner is obviously angling for a particular answer as in push polling or if the respondent wishes to please the questioner by answering what appears to be the morally right answer. An example of the latter might be if a woman surveys a man on his attitudes to domestic violence , or someone who obviously cares about the natural environment environment asks people how much they value a wilderness area . This occurs most often in the wording of the question . Response bias is present when a question contains a leading opinion. For example, saying Given that at the age of 18 people are old enough to fight and die for your country, don t you think they should be able to drink alcohol as well? may yield a response bias, in comparison with simply Do you think 18 year olds should be able to drink alcohol? It also occurs in situations of voluntary response, such as phone in polls, where the people who care enough to call are not necessarily a statistically representative sample of the actual population. Non response bias is not the opposite of response bias and is not a type of cognitive bias it occurs in a statistical survey if those who respond to the survey differ in the outcome variable for example, evaluation of the need for financial ... status, are reported and or accounted for through statistical modelling in any publication of the results. 1. Cataloging in Publication

Globalize date November 2010 Unreferenced date November 2010 In publishing and library science , Cataloging in Publication CIP , or Cataloguing in Publication is basic library catalog cataloging data for a work, prepared in advance of publication by the national library of the country where the work is principally published or by the library of a publishing organisation such as a government department. The name reflects the usual practice of including that information in the corresponding publication in the case of books, near the bottom of the copyright page , and can be very useful for less experienced cataloguers when adding such items to their collections. The national libraries CIP staffs restrict the range of publications that CIP will be prepared for, for instance requiring access to assistance from the publisher s staff. An all too frequent problem with CIP is when publishers change bibliographic details, such as the wording of a title, after receiving the CIP data. The CIP data as published in the item will be incorrect and not able to be used by subsequent cataloguing agencies without manual amendment and if a pre publication record has been entered onto a database it can be difficult to locate and edit to match the details on the item itself. Each national library maintains a database of the entries it writes. 1. Publication subvention

Multiple issues unreferenced December 2009 orphan December 2009 wikify December 2009 In academic publishing , a publication subvention is guaranteed funding towards a partial subsidy of a scholar s publication in book form. The idea has recently been proposed as a possible solution to the crisis, as some identify it, associated with the difficulty of publishing scholarly books, emerging from the combination of small audiences with many academic press books losing money on their publication, and even good sellers profiting publishers only in the thousands of dollars and high demands with a published book typically required for tenure in many fields . Typical proposals call for a publication subvention of a few thousand dollars to be associated with each new faculty job, or even with each admitted Ph.D. student, by the sponsoring institution, in order to alleviate the financial strain on the academic presses finances and allow them to choose works for publication based purely on merit. 1. Tape bias

with AC bias. Comment Information from a WW2 Army publication Electrical and Mechanical Engineering ...Tape bias is the term for two phenomena, DC bias and AC bias , that improve the fidelity of analogue magnetic tape sound recording s. DC bias is the addition of a direct current to the audio signal that is being recorded. AC bias is the addition of an inaudible high frequency signal generally from 40 ... by its coercivity . Bias increases the signal quality of most audio recordings significantly ..., but it was later overturned in favour of the earlier patent US 1653467 by Joseph A. O Neill. DC bias ... of DC bias was that it left the tape with a net magnetisation which, because of the grain of the tape particles, generated significant noise on replay. Some early DC bias systems used a permanent magnet that was placed near the record head. It had to be swung out of the way for replay. DC bias was re adopted by some very low cost cassette recorders. AC bias Although the improvements are marked with such DC bias, even more dramatic improvement results if an alternating current bias is used instead. While several people around the world discovered AC bias, it was the German developments that were widely used in practice and served as the model for future work. The first patent for AC bias was filed ... . The value of AC bias was somewhat masked by the primitive state of other aspects of magnetic recording ... in 1940. 1. Defensive publication

A defensive publication , or defensive disclosure , is an intellectual property strategy used to prevent another party from obtaining a patent on a product, apparatus or method for instance. The strategy consists in disclosing an Sufficiency of disclosure Enablement enabling description and or drawing of the product, apparatus or method so that it enters the public domain and becomes prior art . Therefore, the defensive publication of perhaps otherwise patentability patentable information may work to defeat the novelty patent novelty of a subsequent patent application . One reason why companies decide to use defensive publication over patents is cost. In the United States, for example, to obtain a published patent application, one must incur at least filing fee, examination fee, search fees, and early publication fees currently 530, minimum plus 300 for early publication , and meet the filing requirements for a proper patent application. The defensive publication route is especially useful for innovations that do not warrant the high costs incurred in patent applications but to which scientists do want to retain access. ref S. 1. Duplicate publication

Context date October 2009 Unreferenced date October 2006 Duplicate publication , multiple publication , or redundant publication refers to publishing the same intellectual material more than once, by the author or publisher . It does not refer to the unauthorized republication by someone else, which constitutes plagiarism , copyright violation , or both. There are several forms of duplicate publication Copyright violation Legitimate derivatives This is deliberate republication in another format, such as the simultaneous publication of a motion picture and a tie in book. In doing this, it is necessary to respect copyright, for the rights to a derivative of the original work remains with the author of the work, or the publisher or other party to whom the author has assigned the copyright.
