  1. Cataloging in Publication

Globalize date November 2010 Unreferenced date November 2010 In publishing and library science , Cataloging in Publication CIP , or Cataloguing in Publication is basic library catalog cataloging data for a work, prepared in advance of publication by the national library of the country where the work is principally published or by the library of a publishing organisation such as a government department. The name reflects the usual practice of including that information in the corresponding publication in the case of books, near the bottom of the copyright page , and can be very useful for less experienced cataloguers when adding such items to their collections. The national libraries CIP staffs restrict the range of publications that CIP will be prepared for, for instance requiring access to assistance from the publisher s staff. An all too frequent problem with CIP is when publishers change bibliographic details, such as the wording of a title, after receiving the CIP data. The CIP data as published in the item will be incorrect and not able to be used by subsequent cataloguing agencies without manual amendment and if a pre publication record has been entered onto a database it can be difficult to locate and edit to match the details on the item itself. Each national library maintains a database of the entries it writes. 1. Publication subvention

Multiple issues unreferenced December 2009 orphan December 2009 wikify December 2009 In academic publishing , a publication subvention is guaranteed funding towards a partial subsidy of a scholar s publication in book form. The idea has recently been proposed as a possible solution to the crisis, as some identify it, associated with the difficulty of publishing scholarly books, emerging from the combination of small audiences with many academic press books losing money on their publication, and even good sellers profiting publishers only in the thousands of dollars and high demands with a published book typically required for tenure in many fields . Typical proposals call for a publication subvention of a few thousand dollars to be associated with each new faculty job, or even with each admitted Ph.D. student, by the sponsoring institution, in order to alleviate the financial strain on the academic presses finances and allow them to choose works for publication based purely on merit. Therefore, the defensive publication of perhaps otherwise patentability patentable information may work to defeat the novelty patent novelty of a subsequent patent application . One reason why companies decide to use defensive publication over patents is cost.
