TOC right Aelius Aristides AD 117 181 was a popular Roman Greece Greek orator , who lived during the Roman Empire . He is considered to be a prime example of the Second Sophistic , a group of showpiece orators who flourished from the reign of Nero until ca. 230 AD. His surname was Theodorus . He showed extraordinary talents even in his early youth, and devoted himself with remarkable zeal to the study of rhetoric, which appeared to him the worthiest occupation of a man, and along with it he cultivated poetry as an amusement. He was born in Italica , Hispania Baetica , which was also the birthplace of Publius Aelius Hadrianus Afer , the emperor Hadrian s father. When Afer died about 86, Attianus and the future Emperor Trajan another native of Italica became the ten year old Hadrian s guardians. Otherwise nothing is known of Attianus s early career, but towards the end of Trajan s reign he was joint Praetorian Prefect with Servius Sulpicius Similis for colleague. While Similis remained at Rome, Attianus accompanied the Emperor on campaign in the East. Attianus was present at Trajan s deathbed at Selinus in Cilicia in August 117 and helped the Empress Plotina secure the succession of Hadrian, either by pleading his case or, as was also alleged, helping to forge Trajan s will. Along with Plotina and Salonina Matidia Matidia , Attianus accompanied Trajan s body to Seleucia and his ashes to Rome. He counselled Hadrian on his accession against various possible opponents, and according to Hadrian s lost autobiography it was Attianus who was responsible for the murder of the four consulars whose deaths were an early stain on his reign. 1. Aelius Antipater

For others of this name Antipater disambiguation . Aelius Antipater or Antipater of Hierapolis One and the same? floruit fl. 200 AD was a Greek sophist and rhetorician . He was a son of Zeuxidemus, and a pupil of Adrianus , Julius Pollux Pollux , and Zeno . In his orations, both extempore and written, some of which are mentioned by Philostratus , Antipater was not superior to his contemporaries, but in the art of writing letters he is said to have excelled all others, and for this reason the emperor Severus made him his private secretary and tutor of his two sons Caracalla and Publius Septimius Geta Geta . This emperor adlected him to the consular rank in his early 50s by Septimius Severus and sent him to govern Bithynia and Pontus but, as Antipater used his sword too freely, he was deprived of his office, and retired to his native place, where he died at the age of 68, it is said of voluntary starvation. His cognomen is derived from the Aelia gens Aelia gens . He also wrote a lost biography of Severus. ref Philostratus Vitae sophistorum ii. 24, 25. 4, 26. 3 Galen, De Theriac. ad Pison. ii. p. 458 Eudoc. p. 57. ref Sources Paul M. M.
