Unreferenced date December 2009 Flavius Martinus was a vicarius of Roman Britain c. 353 under Constantius II . He tried to control the violent recriminations following the defeat of Magnentius . Martinus tried to rein in the vengeance of Constantius notary Paulus Catena who had been sent to Britain to ruthlessly hunt down opponents to the emperor. Faced with Paul s refusal to release even those suspects who had been proved innocent, Martinus threatened resignation but this only resulted in accusations being made at him directly as well. In desperation, Martinus attacked Paulus with a sword. The attack was unsuccessful and he committed suicide. Publius Rupilius , Roman Republic Roman statesman, consul in 132 BC. During the inquiry that followed the death of Tiberius Gracchus , conducted by himself and his colleague Popillius Laenas , he proceeded with the utmost severity against the supporters of Gracchus. In the same year he was despatched to Sicily , where he suppressed the revolt of the slaves under Eunus . During 131 BC he remained as proconsul of the island, and, with the assistance of ten commissioners appointed by the Roman Senate Senate , drew up regulations for the organization of Sicily as a province. These regulations were known by the title of leges Rupiliae , though they were not laws in the strict sense. Rupilius was subsequently brought to trial 123 BC and condemned for his treatment of the friends of Gracchus. The disgrace of his condemnation, added to disappointment at the failure of his brother to obtain the consulship in spite of the efforts of Scipio , caused his death shortly afterwards. Publius Canutius or Cannutius was described by Cicero as the most eloquent orator of the senatorial order. Canutius was born in 106 B.C., the same year as Cicero. After the death of Publius Sulpicius Rufus , who was one of the most celebrated orators of his time, and who left no orations behind him, Canutius composed some and published them under the name of Sulpicius. Canutius is frequently mentioned in Cicero s oration for Aulus Cluentius Habitus , as having been engaged in the prosecution of several of the parties connected with that disgraceful affair. ref Cicero Marcus Tullius Cicero , Brutus Cicero Brutus , 56, Pro Cluentio , 10, 18, 21, 27. ref See also Canutia gens Footnotes reflist SmithDGRBM Persondata Metadata see Wikipedia Persondata . Publius Varinius was a Roman praetor in 73 BC and proconsul in 72 BC and suffered several defeats against Spartacus rebellious slaves during the Third Servile War . The history has gaps in it, and all we know is that an advance force of 2,000 led by Varinius legate, Lucius Furius, was defeated and that a later encounter also ended in the defeat of another 4,000 men. The rebels sacked Varinius camp with an estimated 10,000 men, women and children, but mostly men. Selected ancient sources Sallust, Histories 3.95 98 Maurenbrecher. Frontinus, Strategemata 1.5.22.
