    A Puisne Justice or Puisne Judge IPAc en icon p ju n i French puisn or pu n , junior is the title for a regular member of a Court. This is distinguished from the head of the Court who is known as the Chief Justice or Chief Judge. The term is used almost exclusively in common law jurisdictions such as England , Australia , Gibraltar , Kenya , Canada , Sri Lanka , India , and formerly in Hong Kong . Generally, the term is only used in relation to judges of a superior court, e.g. , the Supreme Court or the High Court of a jurisdiction.     Puisne pronounced IPA en pju ni from Old French puisn , modern pu n , later born, inferior Lat. postea , afterwards, and natus , born is a legal term of art used mainly in British English ref http www.merriam webster.com dictionary puisne ref meaning inferior in rank. It is pronounced like the word puny , and that word, so spelled, has become an ordinary adjective meaning weak or undersized. The judges and barons of the common law courts at Westminster , other than those having a distinct title, were called puisne.
