John Henry Pull 25 June 1899 10 November 1960 was an unlikely archaeological hero. He started life as a soldier in World War I where he learnt surveying skills. After a stint as a gramophone salesman he became a postman and a security guard but always his main interest was archaeology . He was a key member of the Worthing Archaeological Society . He was responsible for the finding and excavation of some of the most important neolithic sites in Southern Great Britain Britain including the Flint mines at Blackpatch , Harrow Hill, Gloucestershire Harrow Hill , Church Hill , Cissbury in Sussex , England in 1922. Because he was not a professional archaeologist, he was unpopular with some of the experts in the field at the time, who constantly shrugged off Pull s work as amateur and unimportant. In the end, much of Pull s work and findings were given to Worthing Museum and Art Gallery which holds a large archive. The Big Pull 1962 was a highly innovative BBC science fiction series concerning an alien invasion of earth. Unlike conventional science fiction of the Doctor Who type, there were no monsters or humanoid aliens. In this respect it was similar to A for Andromeda . The events occur during early space exploration. Earth came under attack by an invisible force, which took over humans in pairs one disappears, one dies. The disappeared one emerges under alien control. The fear grows palpable when it is realised that the number of victims is growing exponentially the time between each attack halves each time, and the number of victims doubles. Again, unusually for the genre, the series ends with widespread panic as it is realised that every effort has failed, the scientists are dead, that the whole population of the Earth will be gone within hours, and there is nothing that can be done. The series ran over six episodes, during the time that the first ventures into space by Russian and American astronauts were taking place. As of 2009 , however, no episodes exist in the archives. The film pull technique is a means of recovering carbonaceous compression fossils for study under transmitted light microscopy. An acid is applied to the surface of the rock to etch away the matrix from the surface, leaving carbonaceous tissue protruding. Surfaces not to be etched can be coated in a wax e.g. Vaseline or grease. This is usually accomplished by placing the rock upside down in a weak, continually stirred acid, so that any debris can be washed away.
