  1. Maintaining power

Unreferenced date October 2011 In horology , a maintaining power is a mechanism for keeping a clock or watch going while it is being wound. Huygens The weight drive used by Christiaan Huygens in his early clocks acts as a maintaining power. In this layout, the weight which drives the clock is carried on a pulley and the cord or chain supporting the weight is wrapped around another pulley which has spikes which allow the cord to turn the pulley without slipping. It is this pulley which turns the train of gears in the clock movement. The cord is kept in engagement with this pulley by a small tensioning weight which is also carried on its own pulley. The cord is endless and is looped over a fourth pulley before going back to the drive weight. The fourth pulley also has spikes to stop the cord slipping and has a ratchet that only allows it to turn in one direction. As the drive weight descends and turns the clock, the tensioning weight rises. When the drive weight needs to be re wound, either the fourth pulley is turned directly to lift the weight or the cord supporting the tensioning weight is pulled down and draws the fourth pulley round with it. The principle was later applied by the French clockmaker Robert Robin who automated the re winding in his remontoire . The drive and tensioning weights were made much smaller and drove the escape wheel directly. It was re wound by the main train of the clock which turned the fourth pulley and was controlled by a lever attached to the tensioning weight. When this had risen to its upper limit, it started the re winding process. As the drive weight rose, the tensioning weight fell and at the bottom of its travel it stopped the re winding. Bolt and Shutter This is a type of maintaining power which needs to be engaged before re winding is started. It consists of a weighted arm bolt with a ratchet pawl on the end of it which engages with the edge of the first wheel to keep it turning while the weight or spring is wound. 1. Sheave

Dablink Not to be confused with sheaf disambiguation sheaf , which has the same plural as sheave . Unreferenced date December 2006 Wiktionary sheave A sheave pronounced shiv or sh v is a wheel or roller with a Groove machining groove along its edge for holding a Belt mechanical belt , rope or Wire rope cable . When hung between two supports and equipped with a belt, rope or cable, one or more sheaves make up a pulley . The words sheave and pulley are sometimes used interchangeably. A sheave can also refer to a pulley which has an adjustable operating diameter for use with a Belt mechanical belt . This is accomplished by constructing the pulley out of several pieces. The two main halves of the pulley can be moved closer together or farther apart, thus altering the operational diameter. The usual construction is some sort of locking collar or set screws to secure the components, one half with a threaded central shaft and one half with a threaded center. By rotating the components one can screw the parts closer or farther apart. Thus changing the distance between the two halves and allowing the Belt mechanical belt to ride higher or lower in the grove. The adjustments are limited to a specific range of size and is not infinitely adjustable. The sheave is thus purchased for the appropriate application. The adjustability of the sheave allows for the correction of speed of the driven load from a fixed speed driver, or for the adjustment of the load place on the driver. Thus an electric motor can have the load placed on it corrected up or down to match its rated capacity. A typical application would be a Belt Driven Blower Wheel with fixed pulley driven by an electric motor with a sheave. The sheave is adjusted for Max Load Amps of the motor to attain full capacity. Conversely the sheave can be adjusted down to lower the amount of air moved or static pressure attained by the blower. 1. Sonometer

Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date February 2009 A sonometer is an Equipment apparatus made of a hollow box having two holes. A string is attached to it by which the transverse oscillation vibration s of strings can be studied. It is also called the monochord because it often has only one string. On the wooden rectangular box are two fixed bridges, near the ends, and at one end is a pulley. A strings music string , often a steel wire , is fastened at one end, run over the bridge s and the pulley , and attached to a weight holder hanging below the pulley. Weights can be added to the holder to produce tension in the wire, and a third, movable bridge, can be placed under it to change the length of the vibrating section of the string. It is commonly used in Melde s experiment . A sonometer demonstrates the relationship between the frequency of the sound produced by a plucked string, and the Tension mechanics tension , length and mass per unit length of the string. These relationships are usually called Mersenne s laws after Marin Mersenne 1588 1648 , who investigated and codified them. For small amplitude vibration, the frequency is proportional to The square root of the tension of the string, The reciprocal of the square root of the linear density of the string, The reciprocal of the length of the string. It is smaller than the nearby supraorbital nerve . It passes above the pulley of the Superior oblique muscle, and gives off a descending filament that joins the infratrochlear branch of the nasociliary nerve . The supratrochlear nerve then exits the orbit between the pulley of the superior oblique and the supraorbital foramen , curves up on to the forehead close to the bone, and ascends beneath the Corrugator supercilii and Frontalis muscles. It then divides into branches which pierce these muscles and supplies the following areas skin of the lower part of the forehead , close to the midline conjunctiva skin of the upper eyelid . In a two pulley system, the belt can either drive the pulleys in the same direction, or the belt ... in systems that only formerly allowed chains or gears. Power transmitted between a belt and a pulley ... subtended by contact surface at the centre of the pulley. Pros and cons Belt drive, moreover, is simple ... pulleys. The angular velocity ratio may not be constant or equal to that of the pulley diameters, due ... or addition of an idler pulley is crucial to compensate for wear and stretch. Flat belts Image ... the higher side of the pulley, pulleys were made with a slightly convex or crowned surface rather than flat to keep the belts centered. Flat belts also tend to slip on the pulley face when heavy loads ... i.e. outer side of the leather against the pulley although belts were also often given a half twist .... Round belts Round belts are a circular cross section belt designed to run in a pulley with a 60 ... al. The V shape of the belt tracks in a mating groove in the pulley or sheave , with the result ... distance is larger than the largest pulley diameter, but less than three times the sum of both ... idler pulley for tensioning, a polygroove belt may be wrapped around a pulley on its back tightly ... belt s ability to drive pulleys depends on wrapping the belt around a sufficient angle of the pulley ... movable tensioning adjustments. The entire belt may be tensioned by a single idler pulley. Ribbed ... between the ribs of the belt and the grooves in the pulley. Its single piece structure is reported to offer an even distribution of tension across the width of the pulley where the belt is in contact ... toothed pulley. When correctly tensioned, they have no slippage, run at constant speed, and are often ... line is aligned with the center plane of the pulley. Industrial belts are usually reinforced ... versa.
