File Yudennosato.jpg thumb right 300px Sagara Oil Field Park nihongo Sagara Oil Field Sagara Yuden is located in Makinohara, Shizuoka Makinohara , Shizuoka Prefecture , Japan . Crude oil was discovered at Sagara, Shizuoka Sagara Village in May 1873, and hand pumping operations began almost immediately. From 1874, Nippon Oil the predecessor to modern ENEOS began mechanical pumping operations. The Sagara field was the only producing oil field on Japan s Pacific Ocean Pacific coast, and was the first in Japan to use Pumpjack oil pump s. At the height of its production in 1884 , some 600 people were employed, and the field was producing 43,000 barrels of oil 721 kiloliters per year. The oil was very light, and could be used in automobiles without oil refinery refining . Production stopped in 1955, with the advent of cheap, imported oil. On November 28, 1980 the oil field was proclaimed a natural monument and protected cultural property by the Shizuoka Prefectural government, and was transformed into a public park. 1. Sucker rod

File Pump Jack labelled.png thumb right 500px The line of sucker rods is represented in this diagram by the solid black line in the center of the well A sucker rod is a steel rod, typically between 25 and 30 feet 7 to 9 meters in length, and Screw thread threaded at both ends, used in the oil industry to join together the surface and wikt downhole downhole components of a reciprocating piston pump installed in an oil well. The pumpjack is the visible above ground drive for the well pump, and is connected to the downhole pump at the bottom of the well by a series of interconnected sucker rods. Working The surface unit transfers energy for pumping the well from prime mover to sucker rod string. In doing this, it must change the rotary motion of prime mover to reciprocating motion of sucker rod. And it must reduce the speed of prime mover to suitable pumping speed. Speed reduction is accomplished at gear reducer. And rotary motion of crank shaft is converted to oscillatory motion by means of walking beam. The crank arm is connected to the walking beam by means of pitman arm. Walking beam is supported by Samson post and saddle bearing. The horse head and bridle are used to ensure that pull on the sucker rod string is vertical all times so that no bearing movement is applied to that part of sucker rod string above stuffing box. The polished rod and stuffing box combination is used to maintain a good liquid seal at the surface. 1. Coal bed methane extraction

Coal bed methane extraction CBM extraction is a method for extracting methane from a coal deposit. Basic principles The methane is adsorbed into the solid coal matrix coal macerals and is released when the coal seam is depressurised. To economically retrieve reserves of methane, well drilling wells are drilled into the coal seam, the seam is dewatered, then the methane is extracted from the seam, compressed and piped to market. The goal is to decrease the water pressure by pumping water from the well. The decrease in pressure allows methane to desorb from the coal and flow as a gas up the well to the surface. While dewatering is occurring, the operator should make sure that the pumpjack is not running too long. If the water level is pumped too low, this will allow the gas to travel up the tubing into the water line, causing the well to become gassy . The main objective is not to put the gas in the water line, but to allow it to flow up the backside of the well casing and into the pipeline, where it can be transported to the compressor station and delivered to the customer for sales. Once the gas goes up the tubing, it is usually recovered in a water gas separator at the surface. However, pumping water and gas is inefficient and can cause pump wear and breakdown. Areas with coal bed methane extraction This process has resulted in the drilling of tens of thousands of gas wells, and extensive support facilities such as roads, pipelines, and compressors. The use of this method is currently expanding in the Powder River Basin of northeast Wyoming and southeast Montana . Seven percent of the natural gas methane currently produced in the United States comes from CBM extraction. Methane from coalbed reservoirs can be recovered economically, but disposal of water is an environmental concern. Most gas in coal is stored on the internal surfaces of organic matter. Because of its large internal surface area, coal stores 6 to 7 times more gas than the equivalent rock volume of a ...   more details

  1. Extraction of petroleum

Image Oil well.jpg thumb 250px Pumpjack on an oil well in Texas The extraction of petroleum is the process by which usable petroleum is extracted and removed from the earth. Locating the oil field Geologists use seismic surveys to search for geological structures that may form oil reservoirs. The classic method includes making an underground explosion nearby and observing the seismic response that provides information about the geological structures under the ground http www.lloydminsterheavyoil.com seismic.htm . However, passive methods that extract information from naturally occurring seismic waves are also known. ref http www.spectraseis.com jahia Jahia spectraseis technology A technology web site of a passive seismic based company ref Other instruments such as gravimeter s and magnetometer s are also sometimes used in the search for petroleum. Extracting crude oil normally starts with drilling wells into the underground reservoir. When an oil well has been tapped, a geologist known on the rig as the mudlogger will note its presence. Such a mudlogger is known to be sitting on the rig. Historically, in the USA , some oil field s existed where the oil rose naturally to the surface, but most of these fields have long since been used up, except in certain places in Alaska. Often many wells called multilateral wells are drilled into the same reservoir, to ensure that the extraction rate will be economically viable. Also, some wells secondary wells may be used to pump water , steam , acid s or various gas mixtures into the reservoir to raise or maintain the reservoir pressure, and so maintain an economic extraction rate. Drilling main Oil well The oil well is created by drilling a hole into the earth with an drilling rig oil rig . A steel pipe casing is placed in the hole, to provide structural integrity to the newly drilled wellbore. Holes are then made in the base of the well to enable oil to pass into the bore. Finally a collection of valves called a Christmas tree oil ...   more details
