Refimprove date July 2007 Image Uzazi 220x206.jpg thumb right Dried Uzazi fruit The term Uzazi refers to the dried fruit of the West African deciduous shrub Zanthoxylum tessmannii syn. Fagara tessmannii , a member of the prickly ash Zanthoxylum family. The name of the spice is derived from Nigerian, where the spice is grown and harvested on a commercial basis. Zanthoxylum tessmannii is a close relative of Sichuan pepper and Uzazi has a similar taste profile to the Asian spice. However, unlike Sichuan pepper where only the pericarp of the fruit is use, uzazi is employed whole both pericarp and seed . This may explain why uzazi has a spicier flavour and greater pungency than sichuan pepper. Even in West Africa this is a rare spice and typically only five or six dried fruit are employed in a dish. Use in cuisine The whole fruit are pounded to a powder in a pestle and mortar and are added to West African soups stews as a flavouring. Typically these would be used in soups where few or no chillies are used so that the pungency of the spice comes through. It is used in cooking traditional soup s like egusi soup , okro soup and ogbono soup . It can be found fresh or dried. The fresh variety is usually wrapped in moimoi leaves, which are similar in appearance and texture to banana leaves. It has a very pungent smell. The dried variety is flattened into discs or cakes for sale. Dried iru is weaker in flavor and pungency than fresh though frying dried iru in cooking oil will restore much of the flavor . The dried variety stores very well in freezers . File Celery asadzuke by ayustety in Tokyo.jpg thumb Celery asazuke nihongo Asazuke literally shallow pickling is a Japanese pickling method characterized by its short preparation time. The word asazuke can also refer to the items pickled in this manner. Because of its short preparation time, asazuke generally lacks the pungency created by other, more lengthy pickling methods but retains more of the fresh taste of the vegetable. Commonly used vegetables include daikon , hakusai , cucumber s, or eggplant . Asazuke is usually prepared by rubbing the cut vegetables with salt and placing in a sealed bag or other sealed container along with such items as sliced kombu or chili peppers. Instead of salt, asazuke can also be prepared with vinegar, Nukazuke nuka , or a pickling solution that is sold in stores. Sufficient pickling times range anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Asazuke has become a very popular method of pickling in Japanese households due to its ease of preparation. Use mdy dates date February 2012 Orphan date February 2009 Zabdiel Adams November 5, 1739 March 1, 1801 , minister of Lunenburg, Massachusetts , was born in Braintree, Massachusetts Braintree , now Quincy, Massachusetts Quincy , November 5, 1739. His father was the uncle of John Adams , late president of the United States. He graduated from Harvard University in 1759, having made, while in that seminary, great proficiency in learning, and much improved the vigorous powers of mind, with which he was endued. He was ordained September 5, 1764, and died March 1, 1801, in the 62nd year of his age, and 37th of his ministry. History Adams was eminent as a preacher of the gospel , often explaining the most important doctrines in a rational and scriptural manner, and enforcing them with plainness and pungency. His language was nervous, and while in his public performances he gave instruction he also imparted pleasure. In his addresses to the throne of grace he was remarkable for pertinency of thought and readiness of utterance. Though by bodily constitution he was liable to irritation, yet he held no ill will. His heart was easily touched by the afflictions of others and his sympathy and benevolence prompted him to administer relief, when in his power. About the year 1774, he wrote a pamphlet maintaining, without authority from the platform of 1648, that a pastor has a negative upon the proceedings of the church. Some ministers, who embraced his principles, lost by consequence their parishes. He preached the Dudleian lect. on Presbyterian ordination in 1794. He published a sermon on the nature, pleasures, and advantages of church music, 1771 on Christian unity, 1772 the election sermon, 1782 on April 19, 1783 at the ordination of Enoch Whipple , 1788. The TAM Mild Jalape o is a mild variety of jalape o pepper developed at Texas A&M University TAM . It has been superseded by TAM Mild Jalape o II , which was released to growers in October, 2002. According to the Texas Foundation Seed Service website The TAM Mild Jalape o II possesses numerous attributes, which should be desirable to both growers and consumers. The fruit is extremely large 7 8 cm and heavy 30 35 g with thick, dark green flesh, very little skin cracking or anthocyanin development black color and mild pungency. Plants are compact in size 40 50 cm , with dense foliage cover, preventing sunburn of the fruit. Additionally, fruit set is concentrated, allowing for fewer harvests. The plants are heat tolerant and will set fruit in temperatures above 30 C. Fruit matures 4 5 days before TAM Mild Jalape o I and most hybrid varieties such as Mitla . Yields of TAM Mild Jalape o II have been consistently superior to TAM Mild Jalape o I and very similar to the hybrid Grande. TAM Mild Jalape o II is resistant to Texas strains of four common pepper viruses TEV, PVY, PeMoV, and TMV. Resistance to multiple strains of both TEV and PeMoV has been confirmed by repeated experiments at the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station in Weslaco, Texas . This makes this variety extremely valuable in regions such as south Texas where the potyvirus es and the aphid vectors are prevalent. Resistance is provided by several genes from diverse sources verified by previous researchers in Florida , Brazil , and California . More than 12 generations of inbreeding have made TAM Mild Jalape o II quite uniform in its virus resistance and plant characteristics. Experimental yield trials have demonstrated wide adaptability in south, central, and west Texas and New Mexico. Yields have been good on the silty soils of Weslaco, but even better on the sandy soils near Mission, Texas and in New Mexico. Plant size and yield have been superior when grown on plastic mulch as compared to bare soil. Refer ... more details
