Each rhyme word is one letter shorter than the rhyme word before. Otherwise, they are the same word. While it is possible to write a pruning poem in couplet s or longer, it is most effective when the reader sees the pruning on the page. Thus, George Herbert , who conducted many formal experiments in verse, writes Paradise as a pruning poem. Unreferenced date December 2009 Orphan date December 2009 Poem of the End with no The in the title is the best known poem by Russian poet Vasilisk Gnedov . One of the most radically experimental poets of Russian Futurism , Gnedov s Poem of the End consisted of its title alone on a blank page. Gnedov would perform the poem on stage using a silent gesture. The collection from which it came, Death to Art 1913 , contained fifteen very short poems that gradually reduced in size from one line, to one word, one letter, and ultimately to Poem of the End. The poem has been compared to Kazimir Malevich s painting Black Square 1915 , John Cage s silent composition 4 33 1952 , and to Minimalism in general. A recreation of the performance of the poem was realized in 2007 by Miguel Molina, and released on cd by Recommended Records ReR Megacorp in a limited edition of 150 in 2009. The recording for the cd consists of approximately one hour of silence as captured via a wax cylinder, a recording device appropriate to the time. The Poem of the End with The in the title is a major poem by the White migr White Russian symbolist poet Marina Tsvetaeva . Written in Prague in 1924, the poem details the end of a passionate affair with Konstantin Boeslavovich Rozdevitch, a former military officer. 1. The Rhyming Poem

wikisource The Rhyming Poem The Rhyming Poem , also written as The Riming Poem , is a poem of 87 lines found in the Exeter Book , a tenth century collection of Old English poetry. It is remarkable for being no later than the 10th century, in Old English language Old English , and written in rhyming couplets. Rhyme is otherwise virtually unknown among Anglo Saxon literature, which used alliterative verse instead. The poem is found on folios 94r 95v, in the third booklet of the Exeter Book, which may, or may not, be an indication of composition. Many scholarly attempts have been made to decipher the collation of the Exeter Book and to determine if works were placed in the manuscript by date or theme. Unlike the Monstrarum Librum of the Beowulf manuscript, the Exeter Book appears to be a self consciously archival collection. The poem concerns the troubles and transience of life. It contrasts the life of a ruler, from the time of his birth to his prosperous rule and life at court lines 1 42 , with his life after his fall, the subsequent rise of hostilities lines 43 69 and his death lines ... 1. On the Train (poem)

unreferenced date April 2011 On The Train is a poem by Gillian Clarke . Its chief subject matter is the Paddington rail crash and its aftermath. The poem imagines commuters on the train heading towards the bone ship and refers to the anxiety of passengers and loved ones alike in the days following the disaster. Clarke uses the technology of 1999 to ground her poem in reality the mobile phones of the victims lie in the wreckage of the train while their friends and family frantically try to ring them. She quotes the phrase The Vodafone you are calling May have been switched off. Please call later. This everyday phrase takes on a new, more sinister meaning in context. Clarke concludes the poem by taking a lenient view, post Paddington, of train passengers who make mobile phone calls they no longer seem irritating, merely essential for reassuring people that they are still alive. This poem was written soon after the mobile phone boom of the late 1990s and as such is one of the first comments on the phenomenon. Two years later, mobile phones would again be closely linked with tragedy on 11 September 2001 . The poem has been included in the AQA Anthology for study at GCSE alongside several other of Gillian Clarke s poems. It is one of a number of Clarke poems including A Difficult Birth and The Field Mouse which comment on contemporary events alongside the minutiae of Clarke s own life. Analysis of poem Original research section date September 2007 This poem was written at the beginning of the First World War in 1914, as part of a series of sonnets written by Rupert Brooke. Brooke himself, predominantly a prewar poet, died the year after The Soldier was published. The Soldier , being the conclusion and the finale to Brooke s 1914 war sonnet series, deals with the death and accomplishments of a soldier. Written with fourteen lines in a Petrarchan Italian sonnet form, the poem is divided into an opening octet, and then followed by a concluding sestet. As far as rhyme scheme, the octet is rhymed after the Shakespearean Elizabethan abab cdcd form, while the sestet follows the Petrarchan Italian efg efg form. The volta, the shift or point of dramatic change, occurs after the fourth line where Brooke goes from describing the death of the soldier, to his life accomplishments.
