The Horn Scientific Expedition was the first primarily scientific expedition to study the natural history of Central Australia . It took place from May to August 1894, with expedition members first traveling by train from Adelaide to the railhead at Oodnadatta in South Australia , then using dromedary camel s for transport to traverse over 3000 km of largely uncharted country from Oodnadatta through the Finke River basin to Alice Springs, Northern Territory Alice Springs and the Macdonnell Ranges in what is now the Northern Territory . The expedition was equipped and sponsored by William Austin Horn , a wealthy pastoralist and mining magnate, who accompanied the expedition in its early stages. The area studied included the country of the Arrernte people Arrernte and Luritja people, whose assistance and goodwill was crucial to the success of the expedition through the provision of natural history specimens, artefacts and information. ref http www.samuseum.sa.gov.au aacg speakingland story07 07 story.htm SA Museum Speaking Land accessed 19 November 2007 ref Personnel Members of the expedition, ref 1897 . The Gauss Expedition 1901 1903 , was the first German expedition to Antarctica, led by Arctic veteran and geology professor Erich von Drygalski in the ship Gauss ship Gauss , which was named after the mathematician and physicist Carl Friedrich Gauss . Voyage Drygalski led the first German South Pole South Polar expedition with the ship Gauss to explore the unknown area of Antarctica lying south of the Kerguelen Islands . The expedition started from Kiel in the summer of 1901 August 11 . Expedition A small party of the expedition was also stationed on the Kerguelen Islands , while the main party proceeded further south. Erich von Drygalski paid a brief call to Heard Island and provided the first comprehensive scientific information on the island s geology , flora and fauna . Despite being trapped by ice for nearly 14 months until February 1903, the expedition discovered new territory in Antarctica, the Kaiser Wilhelm II Land with the volcano Gaussberg . Drygalski was the first to use a gas balloon in Antarctica. Return The expedition arrived back in Kiel in November 1903. Subsequently, Erich von Drygalski wrote the narrative of the expedition and edited the voluminous scientific data. Between 1905 and 1931, he published the 20 Volume disambiguation volumes and 2 atlas es documenting the expedition. Expedition style or siege style refers to mountaineering which involves setting up a fixed line of stocked camps on the mountain which can be accessed at one s leisure, as opposed to Alpine style where one carries all of one s food, shelter, equipment etc. as one climbs. Expedition style also incorporates the use of fixed ropes, and climbers and the porters they frequently employ will travel up and down the route several times to fix ropes and set up camps, while Alpine style eschews fixed ropes, porters, and camps, and climbers usually only climb the route once in a continuous push. ref http books.google.com books?id O SNr4LPdUQC&pg PA442&lpg PA442&dq expedition style mountaineering&source bl&ots 5SMl ychux&sig J2NnIrzjkl1LLIliz7Ai2 xv6Xc&hl en&ei JL FSs71D4 KlAfH IWDBQ&sa X&oi book result&ct result&resnum 2 v onepage&q expedition 20style 20mountaineering&f false Mountaineering The Freedom of the Hills , Mountaineers Society 2003 Mountaineers Books ref Expedition style was the type of climbing Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzig Norgay used in the first summitting of Mount Everest .
