File Stick shabtis bm.JPG thumb Stick ushabti in a model coffin Stick shabtis or stick ushabtis are Ancient Egyptian ushabti s made of wood. They have a rough, anthropoid shape and are not well carved and bear just one inscription on the front. They are not painted or further decorated, unlike the normal Egyptian ushabtis which are sometimes small artworks in the own right. Stick shabtis are dating to the end of the 17th and to the beginning of the 18th Dynasty around 1550 BC . Stick shabtis had a different function to most of the normal ushabtis. While ushabtis were most often placed into the burial chamber and had the function to work for the deceased, stick shabtis were always found in the overground cult chapel of Egyptian tombs, only at Thebes, Egypt Thebes . They are often placed into roughly carved model coffins. In the inscriptions on these shabtis, the names of officials appear. It seems that stick shabtis represented family members and friends of a deceased. The stick shabtis were placed close to the burial of a beloved family member, so that the represented people could be symbolically close to their beloved one. Carrot and Stick also carrot or stick is an idiom that refers to a policy of offering a combination of rewards and punishment to induce behavior. It is named in reference to a cart driver dangling a carrot in front of a mule and holding a stick behind it. The mule would move towards the carrot because it wants the reward of food, while also moving away from the stick behind it, since it does not want the punishment of pain, thus drawing the cart. Some claim that this usage of phrase is erroneous, and that it in fact comes from the figure of a carrot on a stick . In this case, the driver would tie a carrot on a string to a long stick and dangle it in front of the donkey, just out of its reach. As the donkey moved forward to get the carrot, it pulled the cart and the driver so that the carrot would always remain out of reach. The earliest citation of this expression recorded by the Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary is to The Economist magazine in the December 11, 1948, issue.
