In social psychology , the dominant response is the reaction elicited most quickly and easily by a given stimulus . Increased arousal enhances an individual s tendency to perform the dominant response . 1. Response bias

Response bias is a type of cognitive bias which can affect the results of a statistical survey if respondents answer questions in the way they think the questioner wants them to answer rather than according to their true belief s. This may occur if the questioner is obviously angling for a particular answer as in push polling or if the respondent wishes to please the questioner by answering what appears to be the morally right answer. An example of the latter might be if a woman surveys a man on his attitudes to domestic violence , or someone who obviously cares about the natural environment environment asks people how much they value a wilderness area . This occurs most often in the wording of the question . Response bias is present when a question contains a leading opinion. For example, saying Given that at the age of 18 people are old enough to fight and die for your country, don t you think they should be able to drink alcohol as well? may yield a response bias, in comparison with simply Do you think 18 year olds should be able to drink alcohol? It also occurs in situations of voluntary response, such as phone in polls, where the people who care enough to call are not necessarily a statistically representative sample of the actual population. Non response bias is not the opposite of response bias and is not a type of cognitive bias it occurs in a statistical survey if those who respond to the survey differ in the outcome variable for example, evaluation of the need for financial aid from those who do not respond. Often, the differences, which may include race, gender or socioeconomic status, are reported and or accounted for through statistical modelling in any publication of the results. 1. Vestigial response

Multiple issues unreferenced December 2009 orphan February 2009 original research September 2007 wikify March 2012 Human Vestigial Response Ear Perking It has been observed that some people have slight protrusions on the outer ear, also known as the auricle. These protrusions tend towards the top of the auricle. This has been tagged and coined Darwin s tubercle of the auricle. This phenomenon jibes with the accepted scientific explanation the incidence of tubercles of the auricle among humans, are vestigial structure s testifying to our evolutionary past. They are a throwback to the pointed ears of many mammals and just one more vestigial trace of man s evolutionary history. The focus on this part of the human anatomy has finally been followed by a much later observation testifying to our evolutionary past. The subsequent observation concerns an automatic ear perking response seen, for example, in dogs when startled by a sudden noise. This response, though faint, fleeting and hardly discernible in humans nonetheless clearly manifests itself. This phenomenon which is an automatic response mechanism kicks in even before a human becomes consciously aware that a startling, unexpected or unknown sound has been heard . That this vestigial response occurs even before becoming consciously aware of a startling noise would explain why the function of ear perking had evolved in animals. The mechanism serves to give a split second advantage to a startled animal possibly an animal being stalked and hunted. The evolutionary advantage of the ear perking response could spell the difference between life and death. The perking response serves to gather and focus that much more audible information that is fed into the brain and on its way to being analyzed even before the animal actually becomes aware of the sound. This fraction of a second advantage would explain the evolutionary selection for this response. DEFAULTSORT Vestigial Responses Category Evolutionary biology ...   more details

An allergic response is a hypersensitive immune reaction to a substance that normally is harmless or would not cause an immune response in everyone. An allergic response may cause harmful symptoms such as itching or inflammation or tissue injury. Allergic Response Allergies are an abnormal immune reaction. The human immune system is designed to protect the body from potential harm and in people who have allergies the immune system will reaction to allergens substances that trigger an immune response . The immune system will produce immunoglobulin E, IgE, antibodies for each allergen. The antibodies will cause cells in the body to produce histamines. These histamines will act on different areas of the body eyes, throat, nose, gastrointestinal tract, skin or lungs to produce symptoms of an allergic reaction. The allergic response is not limited to a certain amount of exposure. If the body is exposed to the allergen multiple times the immune system will react every time the allergen is present. The reason why people get allergies is not known. The allergens are not passed down through generations. It is believed if your parents have allergies the child is more likely to be allergic to the same allergens. Essay like date November 2010 Unreferenced date December 2009 Free response is a type of question used in tests in education , wiktionary Workplace workplace , and government . Most free response questions ask or require the test taker to state a belief, opinion, or write a short essay and support it with facts, examples, or other evidence. However, few tests solely rely on these types of problems, and tend to work in conjunction with other types, such as multiple choice . Free response questions generally test more than straight knowledge and ask for a big picture type of response see example . Also, they usually allow the taker to choose an area in which they are familiar. Supporters argue that this type of question on tests is that it gives a better indication of the competence and intelligence of the test taker than other more standardized responses, which are claimed to often only measure test taking ability. However, critics charge that the quality of a free response answer is often determined more by ability with the language in which it is given than competence or intelligence. 1. Orienting response

Refimprove date January 2011 The orienting response , also called orienting reflex , is an organism s immediate response to a change in its environment, when that change is not sudden enough to elicit the startle reflex. The phenomenon was first described by Russian physiologist Ivan Sechenov in his 1863 book Reflexes of the Brain , and the term was coined by Ivan Pavlov , who also referred to it as the Shto eto takoi? ? or What is it? reflex. The orienting response is a reaction to novelty. In the 1950s the orienting response was studied systematically by the Russian scientist Eugene Sokolov , who documented the phenomenon called habituation , referring to a gradual familiarity effect and reduction of the orienting response with repeated stimulus presentations. ref E.N. Sokolov, Neuronal models and the orienting reflex, in Mary A.B. Brazier, ed., The Central Nervous System and Behavior , NY JosiahMacy, Jr. Foundation, 1960, pp. 187 276 ref Description When people see a bright flash of light or hear a sudden loud noise, they pay attention to it even before they identify it. This orienting reflex seems to be present from birth. It is useful in helping people react quickly to events that call for immediate action. This reflex can be controlled by the cerebral cortex , but more typically it is controlled by subcortical brain regions. In his 2007 book The Assault on Reason , Al Gore posited that watching television has an impact on the orienting response, an effect similar to vicarious traumatization . The reaction to a change at multiple, and possibly unforeseen, levels. This could include a chain reaction of responses to a single initial change, resulting in a complex set of results, which in turn, could lead to more, and again possibly unforeseen, change. Succinctly, it is akin to the butterfly effect one small event change can cascade through a given system creating new agents of change, and operating at several levels. The term complex response in most commonly used in fluvial geomorphology , or the study of river systems and changes within those systems. 1. Response analysis

Orphan date October 2010 Response Analysis refers to the analysis of mitigation plans for emergency or disaster situations. These emergencies or disasters may be naturally occurring e.g. hurricane s, earthquake s, disease outbreaks, etc. or man made e.g. terrorism , bio terrorism, industrial accidents, chemical spills, etc. . Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the following Anthrax bio terror attacks, and the disasters precipitated by Hurricane Katrina in 2005, emphasis has been put on the development of mitigation plans to prepare for such situations. The field of response analysis is the effort to analyze, validate, and optimize these mitigation plans using quantitative data and computational tools. Biological Emergencies The Cities Readiness Initiative established a mandate for local governments to develop mitigation plans in advance of biological emergencies and implement such plans during these emergencies. The Strategic National Stockpile was established to support local governments by providing large quantities of needed medications or vaccination s rapidly. Development of computational tools to analyze and optimize biological emergencies are currently under development at the http cecera.unt.edu University of North Texas Center for Computational Epidemiology and Response Analysis .
