Unreferenced date October 2008 Vrindavana Dasa Thakura or Brindaban Das lang bn 1507 1589 CE was the author of the Chaitanya Bhagavata , the first full length biography of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu written in the Bengali language . Early life Vrindavana Dasa was born in Mamgachi in the Navadvipa area of West Bengal . His mother was Narayani, the niece of Srivasa Pandita , a direct follower of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Vrindavana Dasa s father, Vaikunthanatha Vipra, was from Sylet in East Bengal . However, it is said that his father died before he was born and so his mother moved to the house of Srivasa in Mayapura . In his youth Vrindavana Dasa took initiation from Nityananda , one of the main associates of Chaitanya and he was apparently the last disciple that Nityananda accepted. Chaitanya Bhagavata In 1535, Vrindvana Dasa wrote the Chaitanya Bhagavata , a biography of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu . Initially, the Chaitanya Bhagavata was named Chaitanya Mangala. However the poet Lochana Dasa also wrote a work with this title. Therefore, the leading Vaishnavas in Vrindavana met and decided that henceforth Vrindavana Dasa s book would be known as the Chaitanya Bhagavata, and Lochana Dasa s book would remain as the Chaitanya Mangala . Praise of Vrindavana Dasa Vrindavana Dasa is considered by Gaudiya Vaishnavas as the Vyasa of Chaitanya s pastimes, since he was the first to reveal that Chaitanya was God himself and not just an incarnation of Godhead. It would seem that the Chaitanya Bhagavata was the only major work written by Vrindavana Dasa. There are a number of other works attributed to him but their authorship has not been validated. A dasa sil mata is a Buddhist The Eight Precepts eight or Ten Precepts Buddhism ten precept holder Upasika laywoman in Sri Lanka , where the newly re established bhikkhuni lineage is not officially recognized yet. Dasa sil matas status is between an ordinary lay follower and a fully ordained bhikkhuni. They are usually expected to work in the vihara monasteries , essentially as maids to ordained Bhikkhu monk s, rather than receiving training and the opportunity to practice. However, some dasa sil matas have struggled and managed to establish monasteries of their own, where women have the opportunity devote themselves to spiritual training and practice. Cambodia , Sri Lanka and Burma have established monasteries for women. Similar orders exist in Thailand , Cambodia and in Burma Myanmar . In Thailand where it s illegal for a woman to take bhikkhuni ordination , they are called mae ji s. In Cambodia, they are named donchee s. In Burma, an eight precept nun is addressed as thilashin or sayalay , whereas a fully ordained woman is called a rahan ma female monk . ref name rahan ma1 cite web url http www.dhammaweb.net html view.php?id 19 title Buddhist Nuns in Burma accessdate 2008 10 14 author Dr. Friedgard Lottermoser date work ref ref name rahan ma2 cite web url http dhammadena.googlepages.com monasticcommunity title Women s Monastic Community accessdate 2008 10 14 author date work ref Sri Lanka s dasa sil matas are recognized by their shaved heads and yellow robes. ref name dasasilmata cite web url http www.dharmalife.com issue19 asianbikkhunis.html title Bold Step for Nuns accessdate 2006 09 07 author date work dharmalife.com ref See also Mae ji Upasika References div class references small references div External links buddhism2 Category Theravadan terms and concepts Category Theravada Category Religious occupations Category Buddhist sangha Category Buddhism in Sri Lanka Category Buddhism and women Buddhism stub ... more details
