Unreferenced date November 2009 Liver of Sulfur is a poorly defined mixture of potassium sulfide , potassium polysulfide , thiosulfate potassium thiosulfate , and probably potassium hydrosulfide potassium bisulfide . Synonyms include hepar sulfuris , liver of sulfur , sulfurated potash and sulfurated potassa . Liver of sulfur is mainly used in metalworking to form a patina , turning copper alloys brown or black. Typically liver of sulfur comes in a dry rock form which must be broken into smaller pieces and dissolved in hot water for use. Lump form The drawbacks to liver of sulfur in dry form are the following Shelf Life Lump form liver of sulfur has a very short shelf life. Flammability Lump form liver of sulfur is considered a flammable solid. Inhalation hazard Lump form liver of sulfur can cause an inhalation hazard due to the dust created by handling it or breaking the larger chunks into smaller pieces. Gel form Liver of sulfur is also available in a gel form. The primary benefit of the gel form being the reduced potential for harm as an inhalant. Medical use Liver of sulfur was once used in pharmaceutical preparations such as white lotion. At one time sulfurated potash was used to combat arthritis . Its last minor eruption occurred in 1780. The volcano s dome collapsed many years ago to form a convert 7 acre m2 sing on caldera . Unreferenced date April 2008 Denitrifying bacteria form a necessary part of the process known as denitrification as part of the nitrogen cycle , their primary purpose being to metabolism metabolise nitrogenous Chemical compound compounds , with the assistance of the nitrate reductase enzyme , to turn oxide s back to nitrogen gas or nitrous oxides for energy generation. This process takes place only in the absence of oxygen , as most denitrifying bacteria are facultative aerobe s prefers to use oxygen as their terminal electron acceptors , however, they could also utilize nitrate instead. Therefore, denitrification can only be performed under wikt anaerobic anaerobic conditions. This is the main reason why denitrification mostly occurs in the deep substrata of the soil , or in areas of stagnant water . The process of denitrification lowers the fertility of the soil and thus is less common in areas where the land is rather well Tillage cultivated . But this loss of nitrogen to the atmosphere can eventually be regained via introduced food and water, as part of the nitrogen cycle. Luminescent bacteria emit light as the result of a chemical reaction during which chemical energy is converted to light energy. Luminescent bacteria exist as symbiotic organisms carried within a larger organism, such as many deep sea organisms, including the Lantern Fish , the Angler fish , certain jellyfish , certain clam s and the Gulper eel . The light is generated by an enzyme catalyzed chemoluminescence reaction, wherein the pigment luciferin is oxidisation oxidised by the enzyme luciferase . The expression of gene s related to bioluminescence is controlled by an operon called the lux operon . Some species of luminescent bacteria possess quorum sensing, the ability to determine local population by the concentration of chemical messengers. Species which have quorum sensing can turn on and off certain chemical pathways, commonly luminescence in this way, once population levels reach a certain point the bacteria switch off light production ref http www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov pubmed 10398554 Autoinduction of light emission in different species of bioluminescent bacteria . Sulfur concrete is a composite material composite construction material, composed of sulfur, construction aggregate aggregate generally a coarse aggregate made of gravel or crushed rocks and a fine aggregate such as sand . Cement commonly Portland cement and water properties water important compounds in normal concrete are not part of sulfur concrete. The concrete is heated above the melting point of sulfur ca. 140 C. After cooling the concrete reaches a high strength, not needing a prolonged curing like normal concrete. Sulfur concrete is resistant to some compounds like acids which attack normal concrete. Sulfur concrete was developed and promoted as building material to get rid of large amounts of stored sulfur produced by hydrodesulfurization of gas and oil. Sulfur concrete is also a possible building material for a lunar base.
