File ASTER Richat.jpg thumb right The Richat Structure in the Sahara Desert, Africa, is a true dome. In structural geology , a dome is a deformational feature consisting of symmetrically dipping anticline s their general outline on a geologic map is circular or oval. The strata in a dome are upwarped in the center if the top of a dome is eroded off, the result will be a series of concentric strata that grow progressively older from the outside in, with the oldest rocks exposed at the center. Many geologic domes are too large to be appreciated from the surface, and are apparent only in maps. Need to add pictures, but I don t own any and will not violate others copyright A Vista Dome is type of Skoolies bus conversion that was inspired by the original railway dome car s. The traditional Skoolies Vista Dome bus is constructed by cutting the top off a VW Minibus and welding it to a matching hole in the roof of an old school bus . There are many variations on this theme of custom bus conversion where people have hacked a variety of vehicles together. Almost all of these types of buses are lived in, some also used as businesses. The term Vista Dome for this type of Skoolies bus was coined by Lisa Steenson and Lori Dieda in their board game Redneck Life. Merge to Spherical cap date October 2011 Unreferenced date November 2009 In mathematics , a dome is a closed geometry geometrical surface which can be obtained by sectioning off a portion of a sphere with an intersecting Plane mathematics plane . It consists of two parts 1 a flat disk mathematics disk , which is joined to 2 a convex surface whose curvature is uniform and which has a circular boundary this boundary joins with the rim of the disk. The disk can be referred to as the dome s base . A pair of parameters are enough to describe a dome 1 its diameter and 2 its height . The diameter refers to the size of the base, whereas the height refers to the perpendicular distance between the center of the base and the center of the concavity. The dome s convex region, which may be referred to here as ceiling in an analogy with architecture has a curvature radius of curvature r sub c sub given by math r mathrm c h 2 d 2 2 over 2 h math where d is the diameter and h is the height. The kind of dome described so far is a spherical dome , though there are variants, such as the spheroidal dome , obtained by sectioning off a portion of a spheroid so that the resulting dome is symmetrical having an axis of rotation , and likewise the ellipsoidal dome derived from the ellipsoid . Geology of the Alps The Lepontine dome or Lepontin dome is a region of tectonic uplift in the Switzerland Swiss part of the Alps . It is located in the Lepontine Alps and Glarus Alps . The Alps north of the Periadriatic Seam are usually divided into three large nappe complexes. From bottom to top these are the Helvetic nappes Helvetic , Penninic nappes Penninic and Austroalpine nappes . East of the dome all three are found on top of each other. The same counts for the region west of the dome, if the Sesia unit is seen as part of the Austroalpine nappes. The dome itself however only shows Penninic and Helvetic the boundary between the two is still disputed rocks. Apparently the uplift of the dome caused the upper Austroalpine material to be totally erosion eroded away. The creation of the dome was caused by a phase of east west directed extension geology extension in the Miocene that occurred throughout the Eastern Alps Eastern and Central Alps. This extensional phase was probably a result of slab detachment in the upper mantle geology mantle .
