PutneyVale is a small community at the foot of Roehampton Vale, just off the A3 road A3 . It is part of the Roehampton Ward of the London Borough of Wandsworth . The area is bordered by Roehampton PutneyPutney Heath Kingston upon Thames Kingston Richmond Park Wimbledon Common Geographically, PutneyVale is effectively surrounded by Richmond Park and Wimbledon Common Putney Heath and Wimbledon Common , with the A3 separating the two. The primary local landmarks are non denominational PutneyVale Cemetery PutneyVale Cemetery & Crematorium , where a number of notable burials and funerals have taken place, and an Asda supermarket. There is a large residential estate, called PutneyVale Estate, tucked away behind the supermarket and cemetery. Built in the mid 1950s, the housing consists mainly of ex local authority masionettes and some semi detached housing. Today, most of the dwellings are in private hands, but some are still with the local authority. Also on the Estate is a private school, Hall School Wimbledon. The Richardson Evans Memorial Playing Fields are popular with Saturday Sunday league football teams, and the NEC Harlequins who train there. A 1928 copy of Punch magazine published an advertisement for KLG fit and forget sparking plugs , with the manufacturer s works being in PutneyVale, with its telephone numbers being Putney 2132 and 2133. Founded by Kenelm Lee Guinness , part of the famous brewing dynasty, he was a noted early motor racer before developing highly reliable auto and aero spark plugs. History The London Gryphons were founded in 1999 by former West Coast Eagles and Brisbane Bears player Mark Zanotti along with BARFL Admin Officer Donald Eastwood who originally played with the Earls Court Kangaroos , and have competed in the British Australian Rules Football League since that year. The club was originally made up of former rugby players and predominantly British. After Zanotti s return to Australia after one year where the Gryphons made the finals, the Gryphons struggled both off field and on field, and eventually formed a partnership with the London Collingwood Supporters group, changing their name and colours to match those of the Australian Football League AFL s Collingwood Magpies . The Putney Magpies were started in 2004 by Simon Thorp in his capacity as President of the London Collingwood Supporters Club, a phoenix rising from the ashes of the London Gryphons. Simon landed some good sponsorship, attracted some of the former Gryphons players as well as some new blood , and with a bit of help from Eddie and the Collingwood Football Club, the Putney Magpies were born. Plot Putney Swope, the only black man on the executive board of an advertising firm, is accidentally put in charge after the unexpected death of the Board of directors chairman of the board each board member actually believed that he, himself, should be elected Chairman, but the bylaws of the corporation prohibit voting for oneself, so each individual member voted his secret ballot for the person that no one else would vote for Putney Swope. Renaming the business Truth and Soul, Inc. , Swope replaces all but one of the white employees and insists they no longer accept business from companies that produce alcohol , toy gun war toys , or tobacco . Putney Lower Common is a part of Wimbledon and Putney Commons , lying about 1.5 miles north of the rest, between the Lower Richmond Road and the River Thames . Putney was probably settled during the Roman occupation. Lower Richmond Road was probably a Roman Road, and the Lower Common open pasture and farmland. Land was lost in the 19th century when Elm Lodge was built. This was rebuilt in 1912 as Putney Hospital . The common also includes Putney Lower Common Cemetery which was established in 1858. In 1871 the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act was passed which prevented further building. The Common still provides traditional activities associated with commons before they were overtaken urbanisation and enclosure cricket is played in the summer and there is a fairground on bank holidays. In the south east corner lies All Saints Church, Putney Common All Saints Church , built in 1874. The London Buses route 22 number 22 bus route begins at the Spencer Arms, at the North East corner of the common.
