While many were constructed to collect water, not all may have served that purpose. Some may have been used for storage of perishable Maya diet and subsistence comestibles , or for the fermentation of alcoholic beverages. After a chultun ended its usefulness, many were used for discarding refuse or for human burials. Unreferenced date March 2008 Chan Chak K ak nal Ajaw , also known as Lord Chac before the decipherment of his corresponding name glyphs, is identified as a ruler of the pre Columbian Maya civilization Maya polity at Uxmal in the 10th century. During his rule, somewhere between 890 910 AD, some of the largest and most impressive buildings in Uxmal, such as the so called Nunnery and the Governor s Palace, were built. An inscription at a large Mesoamerican ballcourt ballcourt in Uxmal, for playing the Mesoamerican ballgame , informs us it was dedicated in 901 during the reign of this king. Glyphs Disputed section date March 2008 Maya script Hieroglyphs found in Uxmal reveal that an Uxmal ruler took the name Lord Chac about 900. Scholars have been able to identify a real historical king named Lord Chac from the inscriptions found on monuments in Uxmal. This is very important because Puuc sites are notable for their lack of inscriptions and hieroglyphic texts, so they provide very little historical information. Some of the stela e from Uxmal also mention the name of this ruler. DEFAULTSORT Chan Chak K ak nal Ajaw Category Uxmal Category Maya rulers mesoamerica stub ... more details

In the Mesoamerican chronology Late Classic period Edzn was part of the Calakmul polity. Edzn may have been inhabited as early as 600 BC but it took until 200 AD before it developed into a major city. The name means House of the Serpent Mouth in the Mayan language. The site is located just two kilometers west of Becan in the Mexican state of Campeche on the Yucat n peninsula . Chicann was inhabited from 300 to 1100 . There is evidence that Chicann may have been dependent on Bec n for much of its existence. Chicann is one of the most striking examples in the region of the mixing of architectural styles. It s buildings have features of the R o Bec , Chenes and even the Puuc style from the north. It does not have large pyramids, but relatively small buildings with an ornateness and quality of decoration that suggests that this was a center for the regions elite. Chacmultun means mounds of red stone in the Maya language, the site got this name from the distinct red color of the buildings there. It is located 126  km from M rida, Yucat n M rida . Ancient Chacmultun Chacmultun s most distinguishing feature is the red stone from which its buildings are made. This color was the result of microorganisms living in the stone which turned red when they came into contact with air and water. The site was discovered in the 19th century by the Austrian explorer Teobert Maler , and was excavated in detail during the 1970s. The city center covers one square kilometer. There are four main districts of the city Chacmultun, Cabalpak, Xetpol and the Central district. These groups of buildings were built on hills or artificial terraces to make them seem more imposing. It is thought that the city had trade links with many other contemporary Maya sites in the area, like Edzna , Oxkintok , Uxmal and Kabah Maya site Kabah .
