For other things by the same name, see Questing disambiguation See also Quest Questing is a game played across a community or geographic place. Originally coined in the USA, it is similar to the concept of letterboxing where clues lead to sealed boxes to be found in a type of treasure hunt . Questing originated with the placing of a treasure box at Cranmere Pool in Dartmoor , England , by James Perrott in 1854. Over time, the hobby spread, and there are now more than 5,000 treasures to be found in and around Dartmoor. Vital Communities , a non profit organization in White River Junction , Vermont established the Valley Quest program as a sense of place education program in 1995. Valley quests map and share the Upper Valley region s special places. 1. Metapuzzle

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Puzzles A metapuzzle is a puzzle that unites several puzzles that feed into it. For example, five puzzles that had the answers BLACK, HAMMER, FROST, KNIFE, and UNION would lead to the metapuzzle answer JACK, which combines with all of those words to make new words and phrases. A meta meta unites several metapuzzles. So if that metapuzzle answer JACK was alongside three metapuzzles with the answers TEN, QUEEN, and ACE, the meta meta answer would be KING, the remaining card in an ace high straight. Metapuzzles are frequently found in a puzzlehunt . The structure of a metapuzzle often makes it possible to guess, with a greater or lesser degree of certainty, the solutions to the puzzles that feed into it without solving them. This technique is called backsolving . For instance, in the above example, after solving the puzzles whose answers were BLACK, HAMMER, FROST, and KNIFE, and the metapuzzle answer JACK, a backsolver might, instead of solving the fifth puzzle, correctly guess UNION as its answer simply based on the knowledge that it must form a word or phrase with JACK. Backsolving is not infallible the same backsolver might incorrectly guess SPRING HEELED as the answer just as easily as correctly guess UNION. 1. College Puzzle Challenge

College Puzzle Challenge is an annual puzzlehunt hosted by Microsoft , inspired by the Microsoft Puzzle Hunt or the MIT Mystery Hunt . However, several key features differentiate College Puzzle Challenge from these events. College Puzzle Challenge is a timed event, and while it does have a meta puzzle , if no team has solved the meta puzzle at the end of the allotted time, the event is declared over and alternate means are used to determine winners. Registration is limited to current undergraduate and graduate students and those who have graduated in the last year before the event, and team size is strictly regulated to four students. Instead of the winning team hosting the next event as with the Microsoft and MIT hunts, the event is always hosted by Microsoft employees. Since College Puzzle Challenge takes place at multiple locations simultaneously, events are coordinated by a puzzle control team at Microsoft s corporate campus in Redmond, Washington . Ground teams consisting of school alumni who are now Microsoft employees manage on site issues such as holding opening and closing ceremonies and distributing puzzles. During the event, participants work on a number of puzzles and submit the answer to each one. The solutions to these puzzles are fed into a meta puzzle, and the first to solve that is determined to be the winner.
