Unreferenced date December 2009 Lycortas of Megalopolis, Greece Megalopolis was a politician of the Achaean League active in the first half of the 2nd century BC. He is now primarily known as the father of the historian Polybius . A political ally of Philopoemen , he shared the latter s view that the Ancient Rome Romans should be dealt with according to the strict letter of their treaty with the League, and that no more assistance should be given to them than was absolutely necessary. In this way they hoped to delay the inevitable increase of Rome s power over Greece. Lycortas son Polybius shared his father s views, and for this reason was one of the thousand Greeks deported to Italy in the aftermath of the Roman victory at Battle of Pydna Pydna in 168 BC. Aeneia Pronunciation needed needing not the original Latin Greek pronunciation, but the Anglicized pronunciation that Classics Philosophy History etc. scholars use in English or Aineia Greek language Greek lang grc , was an ancient Greek city in northwesternmost Chalcidice , said to have been founded by Aeneas , and was situated, according to Livy , opposite Pydna , and 15 miles from Thessalonica . It appears to have stood on the promontory of the great Karaburnu, which forms the northwest corner of the peninsula of Chalcidice, and which, being about 10 geographical miles in direct distance from Thessalonica, may be identified with the promontory Aeneium of Scymnus . Aeneia must therefore have been further north than Pydna. It was colonised by the Corinth ians. ref Scymnus Ch. 627. ref It is mentioned by Herodotus , and continued to be a place of importance down to the time of the Ancient Rome Roman wars in Greece , although we are told that a great part of its population was removed to Thessalonica, when the latter city was founded by Cassander . ref Herodotus vii. 123 Strabo p. 330 Dionys. i. 49 Lycophron 1236 and Schol. In 168 BC, the Romans invaded Macedonia Roman province Macedonia and overthrew the king, Perseus of Macedon Perseus , in the Battle of Pydna First Battle of Pydna . In 149 BC, Andriskos, at that time ruler of Adramyttium only, and claiming to be Perseus son, announced his intention to retake Macedonia from the Romans. As his first attempt, Andriskos travelled to Syria to request military help from Demetrius I of Syria Demetrius Soter of Syria . Demetrius instead handed him over to the Romans. Andriskos escaped from Roman captivity, and raised a Thracians Thracian army. With this army, he invaded Macedonia and defeated the Roman praetor Publius Juventius in 149 BC. Andriskos then declared himself King Philip VI of Macedonia. In 148 BC, Andriskos conquered Thessaly and made an alliance with Carthage , thus bringing the Roman wrath on him. In 148 BC, in what the Romans called the Fourth Macedonian War , he was defeated by the Roman praetor Quintus Caecilius Metellus Macedonicus Q. Caecilius Metellus 148 at the Battle of Pydna 148 BC Second Battle of Pydna , and fled to Thrace , whose prince gave him up to Rome , thus marking the final end to Andriskos reign of Macedonia. Andriscus s brief reign over Macedonia was marked by cruelty and extortion. After this Macedonia was formally reduced to a Roman province.
