refimprove date February 2011 A pylon turn is a flight maneuver in which an aircraft banks into a circular turn, in such a way that an imaginary line projecting straight out the side of the aircraft nominally the wing points to a fixed point on the ground. The maneuver originated early in the 20th century in air racing . Racing The pylon turn was originally used in air racing , where courses were set up with pylon disambiguation pylon s to mark a location on the ground, and the planes would have to turn around at that point before returning to the airstrip. Pylons are also used in triples to set up a triangular circuit for aviation races races in which all competitors must stay outside of the three pylons. Delivery In the film End of the Spear , a maneuver conceived of as a pylon turn is depicted as a method to deliver messages or packages by plane without needing to land. The film depicts a former World War II pilot in 1955 using a bucket on a line to give gifts to the Huaorani people of Ecuador where there was no landing strip. He is shown to circle a spot near the village in such a way that the bucket would remain stationary on the ground, permitting transfer of material. Some mail services have used the same technique to deliver mail where there are no available landing strips. Dubious date February 2012 Reason The physical do ability is in doubt. There is little reliable documentation. Tales told are mythic in nature. Could still be true though, just needs some research and it s just too compelling to delete viciously. They are used for the transport of electricity generated at the Dnieper Power Station over a span of 900 metres from Khortytsia Island to the east bank of Dnieper River . The two triples are an unofficial landmark of Zaporizhia. citation needed date November 2010 History The powerline crossing, which was one of the first of its kind in the former USSR , was built between 1930 and 1932 and consisted originally of 4 towers on both ends of the span interconnected by a gangway equipped a railing in a height of convert 63.5 m ft . In World War II both towers were destroyed or dismantled. Between 1945 and 1949 the pylons were rebuilt using the old foundations. However, on each side of the span only three towers were rebuilt. The unused foundation, on which the fourth tower on Khortytsia Island stood, still exists. Configuration Each pylon has a single crossarm designed to carry 6 conductors. However, only 4 conductors, two at the edge and two near the pylon, are installed there. From the middle of each crossbar, half a support structure runs down to the gangway. At this point on the underside of the gangway the insulator carrying the middle conductor is fixed. Although the triple is capable of carrying 18 conductors for 6 150 kV circuits, only 5 circuits use it at present. A sixth circuit runs parallel to the triple on a new tubular steel monopolar powerline tower. All towers of both triples are painted red and white and equipped with a ladder. Image FAA EightsOnPylons.gif thumb right The FAA Airplane Flying Handbook FAA H 8083 3A gives detailed instructions on flying Eights on Pylons Eights on Pylons or Pylon Eights, is a ground reference maneuver where an aircraft is flown in a figure eight pattern around two selected points on the ground the pylons . ref United States Department of Transportation, Federal Aviation Administration, FAA H 8083 3A, Airplane Flying Handbook ref However, Eights on Pylons differs from similar maneuvers such as Eights Along a Road, Eights Across a Road, or Eights Around Pylons in that the objective of Eights on Pylons is not to maintain a specific altitude and ground track, but rather to fly the airplane so that the pylon remains fixed in place when viewed from the cockpit along a line parallel to the lateral axis of the aircraft. This is only possible when the aircraft is flown at the pivotal altitude corresponding to the current groundspeed. If the aircraft is flying in wind, the groundspeed will vary throughout the maneuver and thus the pivotal altitude will change also. However, the pivotal altitude varies only with the ground speed and not with the radius of turn or the angle of bank. So whether the maneuver is flown very close to the pylon with the aircraft banked 60 degrees, or farther from the pylon at 30 degrees bank, the necessary altitude is the same. In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration requires pilots to demonstrate Eights on Pylons to obtain a Commercial Pilot License .
