This squadron was a White movement White anti communist and counter revolutionary unit during the Russian Civil War . It was known also as the Russian Squadron . History In 1920 the last remnants of the former Denikin s forces were confined to the Crimea n peninsula and commanded by PyotrNikolayevichWrangel . In November 1920 the Bolsheviks captured the White position and the White forces evacuated to Turkey. The fleet was re organised under the command of Rear Admiral Mikhail Alexandrovich Kedrov and was granted asylum by the French. The fleet moved to Bizerta in Tunisia by February 1921 and was interned there under the command of Rear Admiral Mikhail Berens . As well as the crews of the ships the Russian community included 4,500 civilian refugees. The French Government Diplomatic recognition recognised the Soviet Union in 1924 and gave ownership of the ships to the Soviets. A technical commission directed by Alexei Krylov arrived in Bizerta in December and found the warships unrepairable. The ships were sold as scrap metal by the Soviet government in Bizerta. Many of the sailors of the fleet settled in France as White Emigre s. Biography Durnova was born in Moscow in 1845. He was a graduate of the Imperial Naval School and Military Naval Law Academy . He served in the Ministry of Justice reaching the position of Assistant Procurator of the Kiev Court of Appeals until transferring to the Ministry of the Interior in 1881. He was appointed Director of Police in 1884 and remained in that position until 1893 when he was forced to resign due to a disagreement between himself and the Spain Spanish Ambassador to Russia that involved misuse of Police powers. He was appointed to the Imperial Russian Governing Senate in 1893 where he distinguished himself. In 1900, he was appointed Assistant Minister of the Interior in charge of Posts and Telegraph services at the request of Dmitry Sergeyevich Sipyagin Sipiagin . He remained in this position until 1905 when he was appointed Minister of the Interior on Sergei Witte Witte s recommendation.
