  1. Solarimeter

A solarimeter is a pyranometer , a type of measurement measuring device used to measure combined direct and diffuse solar radiation . An integrating solarimeter measures energy developed from solar radiation based on the absorption of heat by a black body . The principle this instrument was designed on was first developed by the Italian priest, Father Angelo Bellani . He invented the Actinometer actinometric method which is based on physical and chemical techniques. ref cite web title Figure 8. 1. Pyrheliometer

File Hukseflux huksetrackv1.jpg thumb right Example of a pyrheliometer on a solar tracker which keeps the instrument pointed at the sun. A black shadow band keeps the pyranometer shaded, so that it measures diffuse radiation only. The global solar radiation is then calculated from direct and diffuse radiation. Sunlight enters the instrument through a window and is directed onto a thermopile which converts heat to an electrical signal that can be recorded. The signal voltage is converted via a formula to measure watts per square metre ref http www.global greenhouse warming.com pyrheliometer.html ref . It is used with a solar tracking system to keep the instrument aimed at the sun. A pyrheliometer is often used in the same setup with a pyranometer . Standards Pyrheliometer measurement specifications are subject to International Organization for Standardization ISO and World Meteorological Organization WMO standards. Applications Typical pyrheliometer measurement applications include scientific meteorological and climate observations, material testing research, and assessment of the efficiency of Solar thermal collector solar collector s and Photovoltaics photovoltaic devices . 1. Radiometer

Image Crookes radiometer.jpg thumb 210px An example of a Crookes radiometer . The vanes rotate when exposed to light, with faster rotation for more intense light, providing a quantitative measurement of electromagnetic radiation intensity. A radiometer is a device for measuring the radiometry radiant flux power of electromagnetic radiation . Generally, the term radiometer denotes an infrared radiation detector, yet it also includes detectors operating on any Electromagnetic radiation electromagnetic wavelength. A common example is the Crookes radiometer , an early model device wherein a rotor having vanes which are dark on one side, and light on the other in a partial vacuum spins when exposed to light. A common myth one originally held even by Crookes is that the momentum of the absorbed light on the black faces makes the radiometer operate. If this were true however, the radiometer would spin away from the non black faces, since the photons bouncing off those faces impart even more momentum than the photons absorbed on the black faces. Follow the link below for an in depth explanation of the principles behind a Crookes radiometer. The Nichols radiometer operates on a different principle and is more sensitive than the Crookes type. A microwave radiometer operates in the microwave wavelengths. The radiometer contains argon gas to enable it to rotate. The Microelectromechanical systems MEMS radiometer, invented by Patrick Jankowiak, can operate on the principles of Nichols or Crooke and can operate over a wide spectrum of wavelength and particle energy levels. ref http patft.uspto.gov netacgi nph Parser?Sect1 PTO2&Sect2 HITOFF&p 1&u 2Fnetahtml 2FPTO 2Fsearch bool.html&r 3&f G&l 50&co1 AND&d PTXT&s1 7,495,199&OS 7,495,199&RS 7,495,199 MEMS Radiometer United States Patent 7,495,199 ref See also Radiation pressure Net radiometer Bolometer Pyranometer Radiometry Spectroradiometer Copernicus Solar sail Photon rocket References reflist External links commons Radiometer htt ...   more details

  1. SCR-658 radar

The SCR 658 radar was developed in conjunction with the SCR 268 radar . It was preceded by the SCR 258. Its primary purpose was to track weather balloons. Prior to this it was only possible to track weather balloons with a theodolite , causing difficulty with visual tracking in poor weather conditions. The set is small enough to be portable and carried in a Ben Hur trailer .
