Phosphate nephropathy consists of damage to the kidney s caused by the formation of phosphate crystals within the renal tubules, damaging the nephron , and can cause acute renal failure . Phosphate nephropaty frequently occurs following the ingestion of oral sodium phosphate laxatives such as C.B. Fleet s Phospho soda and Salix s Visocol taken for bowel preparation bowel cleansing prior to a colonoscopy . The risk of this complication is increased with age, dehydration , or in the presence of hypertension or if the patient is taking an ACE inhibitor or angiotensin receptor blocker . Other agents used for bowel preparation e.g. magnesium citrate or PEG 3350 & electrolyte based purgatives such as Colyte or Golytely do not carry this risk. According to the Food and Drug Administration United States U.S. Food and Drug Administration FDA , Acute phosphate nephropathy is a form of acute kidney injury that is associated with deposits of calcium phosphate crystals in the renal tubules that may result in permanent renal function impairment. Acute phosphate nephropathy is a rare, serious adverse event that has been associated with the use of OSPs. Orphan date August 2008 refimprove date August 2008 This is applicable to laboratory analysis particularly in the determination of water pollution . Such an analytical test may be either qualitative or quantitative. A Quantitative method to determine the amount of phosphate present in samples such as boiler feedwater is as follows. A measured amount of boiler water is poured into a mixing tube and ammonium heptamolybdate reagent is added. The tube is then stoppered and vigorously shaken. The next step is to add dilute stannous chloride reagent, which has been freshly prepared from concentrated stannous chloride reagent and distilled water, to the mixture in the tube. This will produce a blue color due to the formation of molybdenum blue and the depth of the blue color indicates the amount of phosphate in the boiler water. The absorbance of the blue solution can be measured with a Colorimeter chemistry colorimeter and the concentration of phosphate in the original solution can be calculated. Alternatively, a direct but approximate reading of phosphate concentration can be obtained by using a Lovibond comparator . This method for phosphate determination is known as Deniges method ref http www3.interscience.wiley.com journal 112603635 abstract?CRETRY 1&SRETRY 0 ref . A simple Qualitative method to determine the presence of phosphate ions in a sample is as follows. A small amount of the sample is acidified with Concentrated Nitric Acid to which a little ammonium molybdate is added. The presence of Phosphate Ions is indicated by the formation of a bright yellow layer. References references Category Chemical tests ... more details

Urea phosphate is an organic compound of carbon , hydrogen , nitrogen , oxygen and phosphorus . Its formula is CO NH sub 2 sub sub 2 sub .H sub 3 sub PO sub 4 sub . It is made by reacting urea with phosphoric acid . It is sometimes used as a fertilizer as such, its NPK formula is 17 44 0. It is soluble in water, and produces a strongly acidic solution. Urea phosphate is sometimes added to blends which contain calcium nitrate and magnesium nitrate to produce water soluble formulas such as 15 5 15, 13 2 20, and 13 2 13. The acidity of urea phosphate allows calcium Ca , magnesium Mg and phosphorus P to co exist in solution. Under less acidic conditions, there would be precipitation of Ca Mg phosphate s. Orphan date February 2009 merge organophosphates date February 2011 Alkyl phosphates belong to a group of organic compound s called organophosphorus compounds . They are ester s of phosphoric acid H sub 3 sub PO sub 4 sub and corresponding alcohol . For example, the formula of methyl phosphate is CH sub 3 sub H sub 2 sub PO sub 4 sub , dimethyl phosphate CH sub 3 sub sub 2 sub HPO sub 4 sub and trimethyl phosphate CH sub 3 sub sub 3 sub PO sub 4 sub . Alkyl phosphates are widely distributed in nature, and form the basis of most biological processes. For example, high energy metabolites such as Adenosine triphosphate ATP and Phosphoenolpyruvate PEP are alkyl phosphates, as are nucleic acids such as DNA and RNA . Alkyl phosphates are also important medicinally, for example the HIV drug Zidovudine AZT is inactive until it becomes an alkyl phosphate in vivo .
