  1. AdS/QCD

unreferenced date July 2009 In theoretical physics , the AdS QCD correspondence is a program to describe Quantum Chromodynamics QCD in terms of a dual gravitational theory, following the principles of the AdS CFT correspondence in a setup where the quantum field theory is not a conformal field theory . Such an alternative description of QCD could provide the physicists with new procedures to calculate many observables more efficiently. The idea of AdS QCD goes back to a paper by Gerard t Hooft who had shown that the limit of a gauge theory with a large number of colors is a version of string theory . The picture became much more specific in 1997 when Juan Maldacena identified explicit string theories that are equivalent to various gauge theories with supersymmetry . While many physicists such as Alexander Markovich Polyakov Alexander Polyakov believe that this idea is very good, some QCD experts such as Frank Wilczek remain skeptical whether or not this program may lead to quantitative, accurate predictions that can t be extracted from QCD itself. 1. Perturbative QCD

Perturbative QCD is a subfield of particle physics in which the theory of strong interactions, Quantum Chromodynamics QCD , is studied by using the fact that the strong coupling constant math alpha s math is small in high energy or short distance interactions, thus allowing Perturbation theory quantum mechanics Perturbation theory techniques to be applied. In most circumstances, making testable predictions with QCD is extremely difficult, due to the infinite number of topologically inequivalent interactions possible. Over short distances, the coupling is small enough that this infinite number of terms can be approximated accurately by a much more manageable number of terms. Although limited in scope, this approach has resulted in the most precise tests of QCD to date. The first and most clear test of Perturbative QCD is R measurement in SubatomicParticle Antielectron SubatomicParticle Electron annihilation. R is defined as the ratio of production rate for SubatomicParticle Antielectron     SubatomicParticle Electron     Hadrons to that for SubatomicParticle Antielectron     SubatomicParticle Electron     SubatomicParticle Antimuon     SubatomicParticle Muon . Since only the total production rate is considered, summation over all final state hadrons canceled the dependence on specific hadron type, and this R ratio can be calculated in Perturbative QCD strictly. Unfortunately, most of the processes can not be calculated directly with Perturbative QCD, since one cannot observe free quarks and gluons due to color confinement the hadron structure has a nonperturbative nature. Fortunately, physicists developed the QCD factorization theorem , which separates the Cross section physics cross section into two parts the process dependent Perturbative QCD calculable short distance Parton particle physics parton cross section, and the universal ... 1. Super QCD

In theoretical physics , super QCD is a supersymmetric gauge theory which resembles quantum chromodynamics QCD but contains additional particles and interactions which render it supersymmetry supersymmetric . The most commonly used version of super QCD is in 4 dimensions and contains one Majorana spinor supercharge. The particle content consists of vector superfield vector supermultiplets , which include gluon gluons and gluino gluinos and also chiral superfield chiral supermultiplets which contain quark quarks and squark squarks transforming in the fundamental representation of the gauge group. This theory has many features in common with real world QCD, for example in some phases it manifests color confinement confinement and chiral symmetry breaking . The supersymmetry of this theory means that, unlike QCD, one may use nonrenormalization theorem nonrenormalization theorems to analytically demonstrate the existence of these phenomena and even calculate the condensate which breaks the chiral symmetry. Phases of super QCD Consider 4 dimensional SQCD with gauge group SU N and M flavors of chiral multiplets. The vacuum structure depends on M and N. The squarks may be reorganized into meson mesons and baryon baryons , and the moduli space of vacuum vacua of the theory may be parametrized by their vacuum expectation value vacuum expectation values . On most of the moduli space the Higgs mechanism makes all of the fields massive, and so they may be path integral integrated out . Classically, the resulting moduli space is singularity singular . The singularities correspond to points where some gluons are massless, and so could not be integrated out. In the full quantum field theory quantum moduli space is nonsingular, and its structure depends on the relative values of M and N. For example, when M is less than or equal to N 1, the theory exhibits confinement. When M is less ... spires find hep www?j PHLTA,B125,487 The Massless Limit Of Supersymmetric Qcd . 1. International Workshops on Lattice QCD and Numerical Analysis

The International Workshops on Lattice QCD and Numerical Analysis first started in 1995. The aim is to bring together applied mathematicians and theoretical physicists as well as to stimulate the exchange of ideas between leading experts in the fields of Lattice QCD and numerical analysis . As the scale of computational resources available for lattice quantum field theory calculations steadily increases, the ambitions of practitioners has also kept pace in the desire for more realistic calculations of a widening variety of physical observables. Many numerical methods discussed at the workshops have been integrated into current large scale computations, generating ensembles of configurations with such a substantial reduction in overall cost per configuration that computational requirements are fairly balanced between configuration generation and measurement of observables. 1. Hadron spectroscopy

Hadron spectroscopy is the subfield of particle physics that studies the masses and decays of hadrons . Hadron spectroscopy is also an important part of the new nuclear physics. The properties of hadrons are a consequence of a theory called quantum chromodynamics QCD . QCD predicts that quark s and antiquarks bind into particles called meson s. Another type of hadron is called a baryon , that is made of three quarks. There is good experimental evidence for both mesons and baryons. Potentially QCD also has bound states of just gluon s called glueballs . One of the goals of the field of hadronic spectroscopy is to find experimental evidence for exotic meson s, tetraquark s, molecules of hadrons, and glueballs . An important part of the field of hadronic spectroscopy are the attempts to solve QCD. The properties of hadrons require the solution of QCD in the strong coupling regime, where perturbative techniques based on Feynman diagram s do not work. It is not clear yet whether this condensate is related to any of the known phase changes in quark matter . 1. Stochastic vacuum model

Context date June 2009 In physics , the stochastic vacuum model is a nonperturbative, phenomenological approach to derive cross section physics cross section in quantum chromodynamics . It is deemed impossible to calculate the vacuum averages of gauge invariant quantities in QCD in a closed form, e.g. using the path integrals. But standard perturbation theory techniques don t work at distances, where the running coupling constant reaches 1. The stochastic vacuum model is based on the approximation of nonperturbative QCD as a Gaussian process. It allows to calculate Wilson loop s. 1. Peccei?Quinn theory

In particle physics , the Peccei Quinn theory is the best known proposal for the resolution of the strong CP problem . The theory proposes that the Quantum chromodynamics QCD Lagrangian be extended with a CP violation CP violating term known as the parameter. Because experiments have never measured a value for , its value must be small or zero. Peccei Quinn theory predicts that the parameter is explained by dynamic field, rather than a constant value. Because quantum fields produce particles, Peccei Quinn theory predicts the existence of a new particle, the axion . The potential which this field carries causes it to have a vacuum expectation value value which naturally cancels, making the parameter effectively zero. Peccei Quinn symmetry is a possible additional ingredient a global U 1 symmetry under which a complex scalar field is charged. This symmetry is spontaneous symmetry breaking spontaneously broken by the VEV value obtained by this scalar field, and the axion is the massless goldstone boson of this symmetry breaking. If the symmetry is a gauge symmetry then the axion is eaten up by the gauge boson , meaning that the gauge boson becomes massive and the axion does not exist anymore as a physical degree of freedom see Higgs mechanism . This is Particle physics phenomenology phenomenologically desirable because it leaves no massless particles, which are indeed not seen experimentally. This Peccei Quinn symmetry can t possibly be exact because it is anomalously broken by QCD instantons. If there were a compensating term canceling the QCD anomaly breaking term, the axion becomes an exactly massless Goldstone boson and is no longer fixed. The effective potential for the axion is the sum of the potential above the QCD scale with the potential term induced by nonperturbative QCD effects. If the axion is fundamental, or emerges at a scale far higher than the QCD scale, the dimension 5 axion coupling term math a Tr F wedge F math is suppressed by 1 where ...   more details

  1. Lattice field theory

Renormalization and regularization In physics , lattice field theory is the study of lattice model physics lattice models of quantum field theory , that is, of field theory on a spacetime that has been discretized onto a lattice group lattice . Although most lattice field theories are not exactly solvable , they are of tremendous appeal because they can be studied by simulation on a computer. One hopes that, by performing simulations on larger and larger lattices, while making the lattice spacing smaller and smaller, one will be able to recover the behaviour of the continuum theory. Just as in all lattice models, numerical simulation gives access to field configurations that are not accessible to perturbation theory , such as soliton s. Likewise, non trivial vacuum state s can be discovered and probed. The method is particularly appealing for the quantization of a gauge theory . Most quantization methods keep Poincare invariance manifest but sacrifice manifest gauge symmetry by requiring gauge fixing . Only after renormalization can gauge invariance be recovered. Lattice field theory differs from these in that it keeps manifest gauge invariance , but sacrifices manifest Poincar invariance&mdash recovering it only after renormalization . The articles on lattice gauge theory and lattice QCD explore these issues in greater detail. See also Lattice gauge theory Lattice QCD Lattice String Theory References and external links M.
