He is best known for conspiring with his colleague Zhang Da Shu Han Zhang Da to assassinate their superior Zhang Fei in 221 before the Battle of Xiaoting . In fiction In Luo Guanzhong s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms , Zhang Fei ordered Fan and Zhang Da to prepare mourning attire for the troops, as he was planning to join Liu Bei in attacking Sun Quan to avenge Guan Yu and take back Jing Province. Fan and Zhang Da failed to meet the deadline and were flogged by Zhang Fei in anger. They knew they were unable to complete the mission and were afraid of being punished, so they murdered Zhang Fei while he was asleep, and defected to Sun Quan.
