In 1937, her parents fled the Battle of Nanking Japanese attack on the city , and resettled in Chongqing . Desiring to be an artist, the young Qiu studied painting, and then taught it for a while. In 1963, she was assigned to work in a factory in Beijing in a job unrelated to her youthful aspirations the production of measuring equipment for the Chinese National Institute of Metrology NIM . During the Cultural Revolution , many researchers at the NIM had been fired, and in 1976 Qiu was asked to become part of their staff. Although not formally awarded the title of researcher until the 1990s, Qiu worked in a small group established on her arrival and tasked to survey historical Chinese metrology. Although she officially retired in 1999, Qiu became attached to her historical investigations, and continued to work at the Institute thereafter. According to Robert P. Yuen Qiu worked as a stunt woman and as a night club performer from the late 1960s to early 1970s. She had a small role in the international production, The Man with the Golden Gun film The Man with the Golden Gun 1974 , portraying a girl student rescuing Roger Moore as James Bond . As there were few opportunities for stunt women and barely any prospects for improvement at the time, she got married in 1974 at the age of 24. After being away from the Cinema of Hong Kong Hong Kong film industry for nearly 20 years, she landed a role in Kung Fu Hustle only by chance. She was only accompanying a junior woman fellow of the China Drama Academy at the audition but the director s eye was on her. Reports show that Stephen Chow gave her the job after unremitting and persistent persuasion. Yuen is also in a movie called Kung Fu Mahjong , with Yuen Wah .
