    Orphan date February 2009 Refimprove date November 2006 Alan Symonds was the Technical Director of the Harvard College Theaters for many years. He entered Harvard College in the 1960s, started participating in technical theater during his freshman orientation period, and soon found himself spending much more time on technical theater than on his studies. He participated in work on the student level, but also started working with professional companies, particularly the Boston Ballet , for whom he designed low cost portable smoke generators, and the American Repertory Theater . Career In the course of his career, Symonds was a part of the lighting crew at Woodstock . He often told the students he worked with about pouring ice cubes into the spotlights there just to keep them from overheating. He is also responsible for the New England Aquarium s penguin exhibit lighting design, and was a primary consultant in the redesign of the dilapidated theatre which originally housed the Hasty Pudding Theatricals at Harvard University . Symonds focused on lighting and set design, education, and safety. He became well known as an Architectural lighting design architectural lighting consultant, bringing the McCandless Method to lighting spaces not meant for theater. He was a volunteer fireman , and brought that knowledge back into theater production safety. His fire speech, incorporating exposition ..., earned him particular notoriety. He was an organiser of the Jarrow March and the first signatory of the petition handed to Parliament of the United Kingdom Parliament . One of 21 children, Joe served with The Black Watch Royal Highland Regiment in India, reaching the rank of Sergeant Major . He married Mary Lavinia Harrison with whom he had 13 children. He was the eldest son of William Symonds , Surveyor of the Navy . Symonds was commissioned into the 38th Foot .     John Addington Symonds 1807 1871 was an English physician and author. Life He was born on 10 April 1807 at Oxford , where his father John Symonds was a medical practitioner. His mother was Mary Williams, of Aston, Oxfordshire . Symonds was educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford Magdalen College School at the age of sixteen he went to the University of Edinburgh for medical training, and graduated M.D. in 1828. Returning to Oxford, Symonds began the practice of his profession as assistant to his father. In 1831 he moved to Bristol , where he was soon appointed physician to the general hospital, and lectured on forensic medicine at the Bristol medical school. He exchanged in 1836 for the lectureship on the practice of medicine, which he held till 1845. He retired from active service on the hospital staff in 1848. In 1853 he was elected an associate of the Royal College of Physicians , and in 1857 a Fellow. In the autumn of 1868 his health began to fail. In 1869 he delivered an address on health when presiding over the health section of the Social Science Association at the meeting at Clifton.     Richard Symonds 1617 1692? was an English royalist and antiquary, now remembered for an eye witness diary he wrote of events of the First English Civil War . Life He was the eldest son of Edward or Edmund Symonds of Black Notley , Essex , where he was born in 1617. His mother, who brought the Notley property into the family, was Anne, daughter of Joshua Draper of Braintree, Essex Braintree . He was one of the founders of the Woolhope Naturalists Field Club 1851 and of the Malvern Naturalists Field Club 1853 , and was an active member of the Cotteswold Field Club and other local societies. During the Great War, he joined the National Democratic and Labour Party National Democratic Party NDP , which had been set up as a pro war party for Labour supporters. In 1917 he was appointed as the party s Chief Organiser. At the General Election of United Kingdom general election, 1918 1918 he contested Mansfield UK Parliament constituency Mansfield , Nottinghamshire for the NDP. His main apponent was the Labour candidate, William Carter Mansfield politician William Carter . Jarrett did not face a Unionist opponent but did face a Liberal candidate and an Independent candidate. His prospects improved when he received endorsement as the official Coalition candidate from Prime Minister David Lloyd George and the Unionist Leader, Andrew Bonar Law .
