  1. Quaker Tapestry

The Quaker Tapestry consists of 77 panels illustrating the history of Religious Society of Friends Quakerism from the 17th century up to the present day. The idea of Quaker Anne Wynn Wilson, the tapestry has a permanent home at the Friends Meeting House at Kendal , Cumbria , England. The design was heavily influenced by the Bayeux Tapestry , and includes similar design choices, including three horizontal divisions within panels, embroidered outlines for faces and hands, and solid infilling of clothing, which is embroidered in the Bayeux Technique. The tapestry is worked in crewel embroidery using woolen yarns on a handwoven woolen background. In addition to using four historic and well known stitches Split Stitch , Stem Stitch , Chain Stitch , and Peking Knot , Wynn Wilson invented a new corded stitch, known as Quaker Stitch , to allow for tight curves on the lettering. Each panel measures 25  inches wide by 21  inches tall. 4,000 men, women and children from 15 countries worked on the panels between 1981 and 1989. Panels have been toured in traveling exhibitions including a North ..., The Quaker Tapestry ISBN 0245600175 1998, Milligan, Edward, Pictorial Guide to the Quaker Tapestry ISBN 0952543311 1999, Levin, Jenny, Living Threads Making the Quaker Tapestry ISBN 0952543338 External links http www.quaker tapestry.co.uk Quaker Tapestry embroidery tapestry Religious Society of Friends ... 1. Sampul tapestry

Image UrumqiWarrior.jpg thumb 200px Probably Greek soldier, blue eyed, possibly with diadem royal headband . Image TarimCentaur.jpg thumb 200px The Centaur , with floral decorations. The Sampul tapestry is a woolen wall hanging that was found in Sampul, in the Tarim Basin inside a 3rd 2nd century BCE mass grave. The tapestry depicts a soldier, probably Greek, and a Centaur . It is probably a Greek work from Central Asia Greco Bactria and uses more than 24 threads of different colors in a typical western technique. The soldier wears a tunic with rosette motifs. His headband could be a diadem , the symbol of kingship in the Hellenistic world, as represented on Macedonian and other Greek coins. The presence of the Centaur as a motif, a typical element of Greek mythology , floral motifs, and the realistic rendering further reinforce the identification of the soldier as Greek. The tapestry was, curiously, fashioned into a pair of trousers, indicating that it may have been used as a decorative trophy. The existence of this tapestry tends to suggest that contacts between the Hellenistic kingdoms of Central Asia and the Tarim Basin , at the edge of the Chinese world occurred from around the 3rd century BCE. The tapestry is displayed in the Xinjiang Museum, Urumqi , China .
