  1. Dialectical research

Dialectical research or dialectical inquiry or dialectical investigation is a form of qualitative research which utilizes the method of dialectic , aiming to discover truth through examining and interrogating competing ideas, perspectives or arguments. Dialectical research can be seen as a form of exploratory research , in that there is not so much a research hypothesis to be tested, but rather new understandings to be developed. Dialectical research may also be thought of as the opposite of empirical research , in that the researcher is working with arguments and ideas, rather than data. Indeed Bertell Ollman 1993 argues that all research is either dialectical or nondialectical. Dialectical research may be applied to a range of problems. For instance, Eli Berniker and David McNabb 2006 argue for the application of dialectical research for the study of organizational processes and James Page 2008 has used a dialectical research method to develop a philosophy of peace education. Although the data description is factual, accurate and systematic, the research cannot describe what caused a situation. In other words, descriptive research can be said to have a low requirement for internal validity . The description is used for frequency disambiguation frequencies , average s and other statistical calculations. Orphan date February 2009 cleanup date November 2007 Documentary research involves the use of texts and documents as source materials government publications , newspapers , wikt certificate certificate s, census publications , novels , film and video , paintings , personal photographs , diary diaries and innumerable other written, visual and pictorial sources in paper, electronic, or other hard copy form. Along with Statistical survey surveys and ethnography , documentary research is one of the three major types of social research and arguably has been the most widely used of the three throughout the history of sociology and other social sciences. It has been the principal method indeed, sometimes the only one for leading sociologists. The key issues surrounding types of documents and our ability to use them as reliable sources of evidence on the social world must be considered by all who use documents in their research. The paucity of sources available until now means that this compendium will be invaluable to social researchers. Scott 2006 Documentary research is the use of outside sources to support the viewpoint or argument of an academic work. The process of documentary research often involves some or all of conceptualising, using and assessing document s. The analysis of the documents in documentary research would be either quantitative or qualitative analysis or both .
