Distaff Day , also called Roc Day , is 7 January, the day after the feast of the Epiphany Christian Epiphany . It is also known as Saint Distaff s Day , since it was not really a holiday at all. In many European cultural traditions, women resumed their household work after the twelve days of Christmas . The distaff , or rock, used in spinning was the medieval symbol of women s work. Often the men and women would play pranks on each other during this day, as was written by Robert Herrick poet Robert Herrick in his poem Saint Distaffs day, or the Morrow After Twelfth Day which appears in his http herrick.ncl.ac.uk Hesperides . Some modern craft groups have taken up the celebration of Distaff day as part of their new year celebrations. In statistics , exploratory data analysis EDA is an approach to data analysis analyzing data set s to summarize their main characteristics in easy to understand form, often with visual graphs, without using a statistical model or having formulated a hypothesis . Exploratory data analysis was promoted by John Tukey to encourage statisticians visually to examine their data sets, to formulate hypothesis hypotheses that could be tested on Baconian science new data sets. Tukey s championing of EDA encouraged the development of statistical computing packages, especially S programming language S at Bell Labs The S programming language inspired the systems S PLUS S PLUS and R programming language R . This family of statistical computing environments featured vastly improved dynamic visualization capabilities, which allowed statisticians to identify outliers and pattern recognition patterns in data that merited further study. Tukey s EDA was related to two other developments in statistical theory Robust statistics and nonparametric statistics , both of which tried to reduce the sensitivity of statistical inferences to errors in formulating statistical model s. Tukey promoted the use of five number summary of numerical data the two extreme value extreme s maximum and minimum , the median , and the quartile s because these median and quartiles, being functions of the empirical distribution statistical functional s and the related interquartile range and range are defined for all distributions, unlike the mean value mean and standard deviation moreover, the quartiles and median are more robust to skewness skewed or heavy tailed distribution heavy tailed probability distribution distribution s than traditional summaries the mean and standard deviation . The packages S , S PLUS, and R included routines using resampling statistics , such as Quenouille and Tukey s jacknife statistics jacknife and Bradley Efron Efron s bootstrapping statistics bootstrap , that were nonparametric and ... more details
