XBLite is released under the GNU General Public License GNU GPL licensing scheme, Standard libraries are released under the GNU Lesser General Public License GNU LGPL licensing scheme. The XBLite syntax is very similar to that of XBasic and somewhat similar to Microsoft s QuickBASIC in that it is a procedural language capable of subs and functions. XBLite also has 64 bit integer data type, User Defined Types and the ability to have multiple modules in order to create GUI applications or games. XBLite History XBLite is a project that was started back in 2001. The main idea was to create a language that was based on the XBasic project that was to be exclusively a Microsoft Windows only programming language and environment. The first official release version 1.0.0 was announced on October 2002, and subsequent versions were spread out amongst the last 6 years of development. Each release boasted both bug fixes and new features to either the language itself and or the different tools that are available with the XBLite project . Microsoft Pascal was an implementation of the Pascal programming language that was developed by the Microsoft Corporation for compiler compiling programs for running on its MS DOS operating system and, in later versions, on OS 2 like many other Microsoft programming tools, albeit they were only capable of generating 16 bit programs for the latter . Microsoft Pascal version 3.2 was released in 1986. The last version of Microsoft Pascal to be released was version 4.0 in 1988, when Microsoft Pascal was superseded by the somewhat short lived Microsoft QuickPascal , a cheaper development tool that Microsoft produced in order to compete with Borland s Turbo Pascal . Microsoft Pascal was priced at around 400, whereas QuickPascal was priced between 25 and 50, and the differences between the two were similar to those between Microsoft BASIC Professional Development System and Microsoft QuickBASIC . Unlike the ISO compliant Microsoft Pascal product, QuickPascal went after the ultimate compatibility with Turbo Pascal. This included not only source level compatibility, but rather complete binary compatibility with widely available unit libraries for the competitor s compiler. To achieve this level of compatibility, QuickPascal moved away from the common file format OBJ and tool set LINK, LIB shared by Microsoft s other compilers. It is interesting to note that Borland s Turbo Pascal V4 had a few quirks, the most notable of which was that it would occasionally ignore one or more lines of source code when said code was compiled. QuickPascal had exactly the same quirks and ignored exactly the same lines. Many of these suggestions have been added to the software and new versions come out with new features several times a year as of 2011 . The project continues because, according to its author, it is needed. While large corporations can afford to pay for expensive POS software many small and medium enterprises cannot. It was a shareware bulletin board system BBS for DOS and later OS 2 that was conceived by Roland De Graaf in 1990. Written from scratch in QuickBASIC , it developed a loyal following. Originally it was a door for WWIV , but quickly grew into an original BBS concept on its own. By 1993, there were thousands of computers running VBBS around the world. VirtualNET, the largest VBBS message network, had close to 1500 members by version 6.14 in 1993. Up to this time, VBBS remained shareware , but in 1994 Roland released version 7.0 as a commercial product. The lifetime registrations of prior versions were not honored for this version and required anyone who wished to use this version to pay. While some did decide to pay again for the upgrade, others became unsatisfied and began looking for other alternatives. There would not be another release of VBBS. Instead, Roland switched gears again in 1995. He released Virtual Advanced VADV as the successor to VBBS. VADV contained many improvements to the old system. One notable feature was a much more powerful scripting language. It was a step forward for the software but once again SysOps were required to purchase the new software. Virtual Advanced would finally reach version 2.10. This version along with its companion, the Virtual Internet Survivor Kit VISK v1.30, would show that it indeed was advanced for its time. With the growing trend of the Internet, VADV now supported features such as POP3 , SMTP , NNTP , WWW and Finger Unix Finger .
